Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

As the Equipment Reliability Engineer, you are responsible and accountable for the equipment availability and reliability at the facility. The intent of this role is to analyze system and equipment performance and functional failures in order to take action to influence Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and Total Asset Utilization (TAU). You will focus on using the best fit and up to date asset management strategies, which include but are not limited to FMEA, RCM, RCAs, Lifecycle Cost Modeling, Criticality Assessment, PM management strategies and predictive/preventative technologies.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Analyzing equipment performance, failure data, and corrective maintenance history to develop and implement engineering solutions, improved maintenance strategies, preventative maintenance activities’ optimization, and other techniques and solutions.
  • Failure analysis to recommend operational, maintenance, and process changes so as to improve equipment reliability, availability and life expectancy.
  • Effectively document and communicate the findings of failure analyses to drive improved sustainability.
  • Lead and participate in project design, specification, and commissioning to deliver the targeted reliability and maintainability of new and modified assets with respect to life-cycle costs.
  • Develop the analysis methods for establishing reliability of company products and their components, prepares sketches, charts, drawings or reports for further developments.
  • Lead or participate in Equipment Improvement Teams (EIT) to drive specific continuous improvement objectives
  • Develops and provides training to personnel so that they can support safety, equipment reliability, and process efficiency
  • Improving plant equipment reliability by implementing programs such as advanced maintenance methodology including predictive and preventive maintenance techniques.
  • Support plant maintenance in developing and implementing local programs to drive site equipment reliability and cost management
  • Providing training and coaching in Root Cause and Reliability Analysis and taking ownership for ongoing corrective action tracking, implementation, and follow up to ensure that all Root Cause analysis projects are documented and solutions implemented.
  • Project planning of major equipment repairs and upgrades by determining requirements, writing specifications and obtaining quotations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Plant Asset Manager


Work Hours: You will work day shift; typically 8am- 5pm


Travel: 5% or less; typically to our surrounding plants within the state



  • A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
  • 3 or more years of related experience in a manufacturing environment


Required Skills:

  • Full understanding of strategic management aspects of reliability engineering, its relationship to safety and quality, the consequences of equipment failure
  • Experience using risk analysis tools and techniques to evaluate equipment
  • Ability to demonstrate the value of reliability activities through life cycle cost modeling and cost reduction/avoidance portfolios
  • Ability to apply the principles of maintainability and availability over the lifecycle of the equipment, process, or system and will identify and support appropriate testing methods and maintenance activities
  • Understanding of Reliability Centered maintenance (RCM) and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)
  • Ability to develop product and process reliability requirements using reliability and design techniques such as FMEA, fault tolerance, optimization, etc
  • Ability to develop models to analyze and predict reliability performance using block diagrams, physics of failure, apportionment, dynamic reliability, and simulations
  • Ability to use probability and statistical tools to analyze equipment lifecycle, conduct testing, understand and interpret appropriate statistical models


Desired Skills:

  • Formal reliability training and/or certifications (CMRP, ASQ CRE, etc)
  • Experience using Maximo CMMS
  • Experience with Cable Manufacturing
