- Purpose of the Position


-Scope out, conceptualize, source, customize, integrate, install and start-up automotive glass lamination, ColdForm and finishing processes on commercially available technology, equipment and automation

- Lead the development of customized molds for automotive glass lamination, ColdForm, film lamination and finishing processes

- Develop expertise in glass lamination / forming related mold design, process, measurement, analysis, inspection, maintenance and repair

- Form highly matrix project teams with process, equipment, measurements, controls and/or automation engineers from customer and/or internal resource pools.

- Lead multiple project teams in parallel to transfer technology, processes and measurements to customers and plants

- Build solid and trusting relationships with customers’ key technical and manufacturing contacts related to glass lamination, ColdForm, hot form and finishing

- Develop strong fundamental understanding in glass 3D lamination, forming and mold design

- Make data-driven improvements to existing processes, molds, equipment, measurements and systems

- Facilitate and lead teams to problem solve in a scientific, methodical, systematic and data-driven manner

- Build knowledge of industry-leading process, equipment, measurements, automation and systems to sustain a world-class glass center-of-excellence in glass lamination, forming, molds and finishing

- Source, test, analyze to qualify new materials, designs, technology and vendors for glass lamination, ColdForm, molds and finishing

- Leverage 3D CAD, analytical tools, simulation and modeling to foresee and mitigate risks in mold design - Proliferate Corning glass application and ColdForm technology across the automotive industry


- Day to Day Responsibilities


- Perform glass lamination, mold and ColdForm process engineering on manual, semi- and fully automated manufacturing lines, measurement systems and inspection stations

- Improve mold design, process analysis, simulation, sourcing, fabrication, measurement, inspection, testing, qualification, cleaning, maintenance and tracking - Automate manual processes and glass handling

- Design molds compatible with automation and online AOI

- Design tests, experiments, FAT, SAT, process development, qualification with DOE for new process, materials, equipment and measurements

- Collect requirements and VOC to develop scope of work, project plan, schedule, budget and resource plan

- Support the design for manufacturing (DFM) analysis

- Estimate budget, capacity, utilization and consult for new product introductions

- Evaluate part designs and determine the most cost-effective mold design relative to manufacturing efficiency, long-term tool durability and simplicity of tool maintenance

- Ensure that mold and tooling meet targets for lifetime, cost and cycle time

- Support mold design and development from concept, fabrication to final qualification

- Analyze mold concept designs presented by suppliers before fabrication and provide feedback from experience to enhance tool function, repeatability, economic operation, and ease of maintenance

- Work with internal and external customers to form project team and lead project execution

- Provide training and technical support to internal and external customers

- Drive and manage multiple project teams in parallel to deliver scope on-time and on-budget

- Develop, coach and mentor individual team members

- Communicate with customers, colleagues and leadership up the chain of command

- Present ideas, plans, project status & opinions in writing and orally with visual aids - Influence key decision-makers and stakeholders via suitable media or channels for success

- Drive for decision-making by facilitating the process with decision-makers, stakeholders and peers

- Work on design and analysis of first or next generation products, process, machines, fixture and machine components for robust design through design and material selection / analysis

- Facilitate the design of manufacturing process and equipment layout, fixtures, jigs, carts and manual assists (generic and customized solutions)

- Engineer and monitor production process and equipment for safety, quality, reliability, capacity, efficiency, flexibility, ergonomics, maintenance and ROIC

- Identify low-hanging fruits, prioritize opportunities, capture quick-wins and share remaining opportunities

- Leverage vendors in industrialization, fabrication, installation and replication of prototype, pilot or production equipment

- Plan, coordinate and execute site preparation, equipment move-in, installation, hook-up, power-on, check-out, testing and start-up by interfacing with suppliers, development, customers, manufacturing, technicians and trades professionals to get systems set-up and functional

- Document meetings, design reviews, site activities, progress, results, assignments, technical understanding, vendor assessment, equipment check-out, on-site installations, engineering changes, performance improvements, trial & experiment results, innovations and intellectual assets

- Share experience & lessons learned, cross-train, coach, guide, develop and support peers. - Investigate prior art and document any potential intellectual asset developed"

- Project involved with Technology transfer, new lines start-up, process optimization, equipment modifications, new materials qualification, fundamental understanding (MEE), new process, technology or product features.


- Education and Experience


- BS/MS/PhD majoring in Mechanical, Plastic, Materials or Glass/Ceramics Engineering or related fields

- ≥ 10 years of solid project, industrial, engineering and manufacturing experience in different glass lamination, molds, forming and/or glass finishing processes and equipment design - ≥ 6 years of project and functional leadership experience

- Exposure to manufacturing of automotive subcomponent is a plus (for example: APQP, PPAP, IATF 16949 or Automotive Safety Testing)

- Experience of living, studying, working abroad or extended travel outside of home country is a plus

- Experience working for foreign multi-national corporations is a plus

- Experience of working directly with external customers is a plus

- Diversity of experience or background is an asset


- Required Skills


- Knowledgeable of tool steels and metallurgical properties

- Functional with 2D and 3D CAD software

- Deep understanding of quality systems, PFMEA, control plan and how engineering, operations & quality collaborates

- Systematic and methodical hands-on process troubleshooting for source of delamination, mold failures, scratches, chips, particles, stains and contamination on the production floor

- Ability to document and share lessons learned afterwards

- Clear understanding of equipment set-up and calibration process with the ability to develop clear bilingual visual work-instructions on how to adjust, job change, calibrate equipment/gauges, clean/inspect and repair molds

- Responsible for the accuracy of work performed and proactively ensures quality of work - Providing feedback, coaching and mentoring to individuals

- Experience working on one or more of the following types of process, equipment or automation:


o Surface cleaning (ultrasonic, brush cleaning or plasma cleaning) and wiping o Hot and/or vacuum forming of transparent glass or plastic with cosmetic requirements

o Primer coating on thin, flexible and brittle material

o Precision glue mixing and accurate dispensing

o Polymers, adhesives, spacers

o Thin glass material handling and fixtures

o Clean environments, tents and chambers

o Mechanical and reliability testing, dimensional measurement and/or optical measurement

o Automated curved surface measurement and profile-of-line measurement on curved edges

o Automated dispensing inspection, pattern recognition and gap inspection

o Precision film lamination or dual sided tape dispensing

o Semi-automatic man-machine collaborative work cells

o Tunnel kiln, ovens or environmental chambers

o flat glass or thin sheet cassettes or packing / stacking with interleaf material
