Strategic Sourcing Manager: Energy & Utilities (m/f/d) 


Scope of Position:

The Strategic Sourcing Manager (SSM) is a key member of the Energy Team within the Supply Management Services Center organization (SMSC) in Global Supply Management (GSM). The SSM is responsible for leading/developing energy & utility strategies and supporting industrial gas category strategies; negotiating energy supply contracts with utility and commodity suppliers; and ensuring competitive pricing and reliability for Corning. The Strategic Sourcing Manager will lead and provide direct sourcing guidance and direction to Corning plants in Europe. This includes the overall responsibility for managing energy & utilities, managing supplier relationships as well as managing and implementing cost reduction savings portfolios. In addition, the SSM supports plant expansions and new facilities to ensure infrastructure requirements are installed according to project schedules.

The utilities under scope include electricity, natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, fuel oils and to a lesser extent water and wastewater. For industrial gases; oxygen, nitrogen, helium, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and other atmospheric and specialty gases.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a key energy & utilities leader in Corning’s EMEA region.
  • Lead the development of energy & utility strategies in EMEA.
  • Work with Global Energy Management (GEM), Facilities Teams and Sourcing Teams to develop and implement cost reductions, energy efficiencies, reliability improvements, and renewable projects.
  • Manage energy and utility data ensuring accuracy and timely reporting.
  • Strategically lead and manage energy sourcing events in EMEA
  • Manage all energy and utility contracts for compliance.
  • Manage suppliers through Corning’s Supplier Relationship Management process.
  • Lead and direct the development of an energy & utilities savings portfolio by working directly with Corning businesses, the GSM Energy Team and Global Energy Management. Provide the leadership/direction to implement the savings projects and proactively monitor results.
  • Establish professional working relationships with Corning business management leaders, plant managers, plant staffs, facilities managers, GSM managers/buyers and governmental affairs managers.
  • Communicate energy and utility market data trends and energy regulatory changes proactively to impacted organizations.
  • Provide leadership and management of utility infrastructure installations and contract negotiations for plant expansions and new sites.
  • Develop and maintain proactive professional business relationships with utility executives, government officials and economic development agencies. Represent Corning as the leader for energy & utilities in Europe.
  • Provide the support as required for industrial gases.


Travel Requirements (please note if international):

  • Approximately 15%-20%. Travel to Corning plants and facilities primarily in Europe.


Hours of work/work schedule/flextime:

  • Flexible working conditions in a hybrid model: 3 days in the Budapest-office and 2 days at home office.


Required Skills:

  • Five years of energy management and energy sourcing experience in both regulated and deregulated energy markets.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of utility practices, policies, and procedures in Europe as well as an understanding of energy markets in EMEA.
  • Knowledge and understanding of utility infrastructure (power circuits, substations, transformers, switchgear, natural gas delivery, pipelines, etc.)
  • Demonstrated negotiations, interpersonal, leadership, and communications skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a matrix organization.
  • Three years of supervisory and project management experience.
  • Fluent in English.


Desired Skills:

  • Supplier Relationship Management experience.
  • Experience managing external energy consultants.
  • Knowledge of chilled water, industrial water, and wastewater infrastructure.
  • Facility construction and management experience.
  • Fluent in multiple languages.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Industrial gases management experience.


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Business or similar experience in a manufacturing environment preferably in several countries.


Soft Skills:

  • Ability to work with people at all levels of the organization and establishing business relationships.
  • Possess team leadership and facilitation skills. Ability and willingness to serve as a project team leader and/or participant.
  • Capable of influencing and leading suppliers and internal customers to desired results in energy and industrial gases where the selection of suppliers is limited.
  • Ability to confront and resolve conflicts.
