Scope of Position: Deployment and execution of optical diagnostic investigations conducted through the Imaging and Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (IFD) for process analysis, development, and improvement. This role supports all Corning business divisions and all stages of product innovation.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Deploy custom imaging and optical diagnostic systems integrated with secondary sensor systems
  • Perform data collection and verify performance of deployed optical systems
  • Design and deploy custom triggering/synchronization solutions for custom designed optical systems, including integration with other laboratory or production systems.
  • Maintain and customize operation of existing 3D laser-based spray diagnostic capability
  • Conduct hands on work in a laboratory, engineering, or manufacturing environment
  • Communicate project status and updates, including documentation
  • Maintain laboratory, process equipment, and laboratory materials
  • Record and perform preliminary analysis of process data

 

Required Skills:

  • Design, build, and integration across electrical and mechanical components of automation systems
  • Experience applying LabView software in automation
  • Experience integrating sensor and automated detection capability in existing systems
  • Creative problem-solving skills with flexibility across new technologies and processes
  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory and experimental settings
  • Strong communication skills with a focus on requirements, results, and observations

 

Desired Skills:

  • Exposure or experience with optical equipment (e.g., cameras, lenses, and light sources)
  • Exposure or experience with C++, Matlab, or comparable language for data / image analysis
  • Experience assembling laboratory scale gas or liquid flow systems
  • Learns quickly and independently
  • Ability to build relationships across functional groups

 

Soft Skills:

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Writing and documentation skills, including experimental data and observations, then creating detailed documents, reports, and presentations within the project team

 

Education & Experience:

Associate or Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, physics, or equivalent discipline/experience with an emphasis on automation

 

Travel Requirements: 0% to 25% depending on project, may be international

 

Hours of Work / Work Schedule / Flex Time: 40 hours / week with flex time
