Scope of Position:

  • The individual will lead multi discipline, cross-functional project teams working on early stage hot-glass innovation projects, through concept generation / certification, technology development, detail design / build, and start-up in manufacturing. Focus will be on robust, first / next generation technology that provide significant competitive advantage to any of Corning’s businesses, and / or enable new products and product lines (prototype and production capable machines). The applications will vary from using standard commercial equipment to developing new custom machines/mechanisms or combination of both.

 

Role within group:

  • Lead/work in a multi discipline, cross-functional team-based environment with highly matrixed resources
  • Identify project resources necessary to complete the project tasks and coordinate the project team’s efforts towards successfully achieving overall project objectives
  • Leverage internal and external custom machine builders and system integrators for detail design, build, and integration of early, mid, and later stages of machine system implementation

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Interface and work with the Research, Development, Engineering, and Manufacturing leadership involved in the innovation and manufacture of new products, processes, and machine systems for any of Corning’s Divisions
  • Integration of custom and commercially available technologies to enable robust next generation solutions
  • Work with other project team members on solving difficult engineering related problems, understanding project related issues, and general process engineering and process understanding
  • Utilize internal lab facilities and equipment to develop proof of concept prototypes
  • Interface with outside suppliers, system integrators and/or external subcontractors for project support
  • Investigate prior art and document Intellectual Property developed as part of project activities.
  • Present projects for review by peers, customers, and/or senior technical leaders
  • Some project travel is expected and will depend upon the project portfolio

 

Required Skills:

  • Project leadership experience with ability to achieve results through technical leadership and influence of highly matrixed project teams, champion new ideas, lead by example, and provide constructive feedback to co-workers
  • Ability to effectively manage highly ambiguous situations and effectively demonstrate leadership in assigned early stage projects that will enable unique solutions to the technical challenges
  • Strong technical knowledge in the areas of mechanical and process engineering and product design
  • Strong technical leadership and experience with projects requiring development of fundamental process understanding and requirements
  • Technical understanding in automation, precision engineering, metrology, materials, finishing, controls, measurements, and numerical analysis / modeling
  • Ability to interface with senior management and provide clear concise project communications/updates
  • Systematic approach to solve problems, make decisions, set strategies.
  • Individual must have excellent written, verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Capable of executing project assignments with minimal supervision

 

Education and Experience:

  • B.S. / M.S. / Ph.D. in a Technical Discipline
  • 10+ years in a technical field to include:
    • Process, Equipment or Product Development or Engineering
    • Project or Engineering Management
    • Project Level Supervisory Experience
    • Technology or Product Transfer
  • Experience working with the Scientific and Technology communities
  • Knowledge of Corning’s manufacturing processes, especially in hot glass forming or reforming
  • Demonstrated experience with Corning Innovation process
