Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Supervise team of engineers and technicians that support the Cleanroom, Coloring, and Screening processes. 
  • Drive fundamental understanding in everyday work activities ranging from routine breakdowns, complex new designs, and unknown process issues
  • Develop/maintain short and long-term strategies for the manufacturing equipment/processes to improve performance, maximize fiber output, achieve cost reductions targets, and maximize efficiency of support resources
  • Sponsor and lead projects targeted at safety, cost reduction, quality, increased capacity, and other strategic initiatives
  • Actively engage in plant safety initiatives and projects
  • Develop and maintain systems to monitor and proactively address equipment/process performance, including trend analysis and implementation plans
  • Provide coaching to team members to assist with their professional development
  • Track department and capital spending to ensure spending targets are not exceeded


Required Education: BS or MS in Chemical, Materials, Mechanical or Electrical engineering OR degree in other engineering discipline with demonstrated capability in working in engineering.


Required Skills & Experience:

  • Four (4) or more years’ experience in Manufacturing and/or Engineering
  • Leadership experience in functional or project role(s)
  • Ability to make sound technical decisions within and outside area of expertise
  • Strong communications skills and customer focused
  • Ability to work effectively on all levels of an organization
  • Strong project management capability, particularly coordination of multiple related tasks
  • Ability to work and negotiate with external integrators to ensure projects are completed per scope, timeline, and budget
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work on an independent basis
  • Ability to complete funding requests for required projects
  • Knowledge of fiber optical and physical parameters including the factors that affects them
  • Use scientific method and engineering first principles to solve problems thoroughly and effectively, using well-designed and executed processes
  • Basic skills for data collection and data analysis
  • Knowledge of the documentation and drawing systems utilized at OFC plants
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings and diagrams


Desired Skills:

  • Supervisory skills, particularly in coaching technical employees
  • Coloring, Splicing, and/or Winding application experience
  • Six Sigma/DMAIC Greenbelt or Blackbelt certification
  • Knowledge of manufacturing cost accounting (budget tracking/spending)
  • Project management experience from start to finish
  • Statistical data analysis ability


Soft Skills:

  • Work well both within a multi-disciplinary team and independently with minimal oversight
  • Ability to coach and develop others
  • Strong communication and presentation skill


Travel Requirements: minimal (less than 5%)


Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: Monday-Friday. The position is overtime exempt. Overtime is not uncommon and is expected at times, however the amount and duration will vary as a function of business needs.  Occasional on-call responsibilities will be required.
