Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.


Purpose of Position:

The Market Development Director is responsible for the application of subject matter expertise in the key Carrier network applications; FTTH, xDSL, HFC, CO/Data Center and Wireless.  The role requires a commercial bias in order to create customer confidence in Corning, our capabilities and solutions.  Deep customer network knowledge is required for the identification of problems, needs and requirements in order to provide guidance on the appropriate Corning solution or to direct opportunities for new product and solution development.  This role manages a team of technical and commercial Subject- matter experts.



  • Leads group of subject matter experts in optical communication applications responsible for applications strategy, market development, and sales support
  • Determines end customer solution set through customer specific network design, modeling 
  • Leads customer/market product solution definition while collaborating with Product Line Management and Research and Development to evaluate, modify, develop and prioritize products to meet customer requirements
  • Collaborates with Marketing to share and mutually leverage understanding of current and potential market applications and technology
  • Develops customer and application specific value props
  • Develop, implement and maintain application product and solution strategy evolution through customer VOC, field feedback and internal developments to sustain value delivery to customer
  • Establish Corning leadership in optical communications applications at the end customer
  • Subject-matter expert support to develop and win large project and revenue opportunities
  • Identify Carrier challenges and develop or apply solutions (product, system, service, software) to maximize Carrier efficiency and Corning value



  • Solid working knowledge of Fiber to the home (FTTH), xDSL, HFC, CO/Data Center and Wireless networks
  • Experience in passive plant network design
  • Proven track record of success in direct customer interactions
  • Ability to lead cross functional teams in a matrix environment
  • 10+ years of experience in the Telecommunications industry
  • BS in Engineering (preference in Optical or Electrical Engineering)
  • MBA is strongly preferred
