The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

 

Scope of Position:

Individual supports the management and development of machining processes for the Corning Phoenix product line. The individual will prepare detailed documentation to support the development and introduction of new products to manufacturing. He or she will lead and support cost reduction projects using structured project management tools such as six-sigma, Lean, and statistical data analysis.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining methods, operation sequence and processes in the fabrication of parts, components, sub-assemblies, and final assemblies.
  • Work directly with internal customers to support process area.
  • Daily monitor processes and tend to process excursions.
  • With a focus on continues improvement, and through the use of operational efficiency metrics, lead the operations of the process area. Collaborate with engineering in coordinating the release of new products. Estimates manufacturing cost, determines time standards, and makes recommendations for tooling and process requirements of new or existing product lines
  • Provide support for daily design review meetings following Design for Manufacturability methodologies.
  • As required, maintains records and reporting systems for coordination of manufacturing operations.
  • Lead scrap prevention teams, relevant customer returns, and lead formal RCCA activities.
  • Disposition discrepant material and strive for RCCA. Serve as an advocate for safe operations within the process area and with all preventative maintenance and interim performance verification activities.

Required Education:

  • We require a BS in engineering required. Mechanical or manufacturing preferred.
  • We are seeking a minimum 3 years in a manufacturing or related field
  • Experience with machining processes highly desired
  • Ability to read and interpret product drawings
  • Basis statistic knowledge: Use SPC to monitor and improve the process.
  • Data analysis skill and statistic knowledge: Can use data analysis software such as Matlab, JMP, etc. Knowledge of statistical analysis of data: standard deviation, mean, statistical agreement tests, data transformation, trend identification, regression analysis, curve fitting, etc.
  • Knowledge of metrology fundamentals: MSA, metrological traceability, calibration, etc.
  • Knowledge of geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing per ASME Y14.5-2009. Can read GD&T mechanical drawing, understand the mechanical process, or has some previous experience with machining or plating.
  • Project management skills: Plans and directs schedules and budgets. Monitors the project from initiation through delivery. Organizes the interdepartmental activities ensuring completion of the project/product on schedule and within budget constraints.
  • Organization, time management, and planning skills, with ability to handle changing priorities.
  • Proficient use of English language, able to clearly present technical concepts, written and verbally.
  • Microsoft Office applications – Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of metal turning, milling and finishing processes
  • Knowledge of geometric tolerancing

Desired Skills:

  • Strong technical background, with emphasis on fundamental understanding
  • Capable of performing data analysis using MS excel (SPC), or Minitab software.
  • Product troubleshooting, repair or failure mode analysis.
  • Work experience in a manufacturing facility.
  • Cost estimating or analysis.
  • Knowledge of Solid Works, CAD.
  • Desire to exceed internal customer expectations for quality and delivery.
  • Ambition and ability to independently fill gaps in knowledge and expertise through self-guided learning.
  • Green belt certification is preferred for Lean and Six Sigma and use of DMAIC for problem solving.
  • Knowledge of materials properties and processes
  • Experience with multiple types of machine tools and measurement systems
  • Experience with CNC and other machine tool programming
  • Experience with cutting tool design

  • Communication skills, written and oral
  • Must be a self-starter, able to work in team environment and motivate others.
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills to be able to build relationships and participate in diverse teams within multi-functional groups and international locations.
  • Ability to interact with multi-functional colleagues

Travel Requirements:

  • Travel will be a minimum, but may be required to support training and customer issues (less than 15%)

Hours of work:

  • The position is for standard work hours (8AM -5PM), with some flex time required to cover off-shift meetings and meetings with teams in alternate time zones
