Measurements Engineer


Scope of Position:


This group develops and integrates the Measurement and Inspection systems that enable Global Manufacturing to characterize and verify compliance of products manufactured and sold to our customers.

The position requires knowledge in metrology, molding and/or fiber optics manufacturing processes to provide technical leadership and support to engineering groups in Connectivity automation and/or Molding operations.

Metrology technical liaison with other business units and Corning’s Research and Engineering divisions.

Needs strong technical curiosity across many technologies, and the ability to learn and desire to work with others for the progress of the business. As part of a global team, this position provides measurement solutions to Corning’s Optical Connectivity business to deliver best in class products to our customers.


Day to Day Responsibilities:


Work closely with experienced professionals across a variety of functional groups (manufacturing, division, etc.) to define, develop and implement measurement methods, inspection systems and establish timing requirements and expectations for measurement requests and communicating any/all notifications to the affected parties.

Advise and support the metrology operations within the manufacturing facility to ensure efficient and reliable manufacturing operations for current or new systems and products, advice on equipment maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting and repair, identify root cause of failures and implement corrective actions.

Ensure that the Plant metrology team has the right resource to perform the functions, and that work is completed in accordance with approved standard operations and current Good manufacturing Practices

Train Plant metrology, engineering, maintenance and operation associates on use and maintenance of measurement systems.

Develop and apply measurement uncertainty / measurement system analysis techniques to ensure proper measurement system application and capability.

Setup and execute measurements, perform post-processing of data, and deliver reports and analysis to customers.

Design experiments and analyze data to identify and implement measurement integrity and efficiency improvements to measurement systems for fiber optical assemblies, prototype and volume manufacturing.

Transfer measurement technology from other location/region or in early stage development to a system ready for use in a manufacturing environment.

Develop and manage documentation in support of measurement system deployments including machine specifications, operating procedures, and drawing packages.

Leverage external suppliers with key technologies or systems integration expertise to develop, procure, build, and install test equipment for capacity expansion needs.

Lead or participate in projects for cost reduction, process improvements to address measurement cycle time reduction, measurement uncertainty (improving quality and yield issues) or equipment cost/availability.

Responsible of management of operations in Division Metrology installations and equipment.

Management of execution of short term and long-term solutions.

Ambassador of safe work environment in Metrology laboratories and Manufacturing lines.


Required Education, Years and Area of Experience:


- BS in Optical Science / Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanics or Mechatronics.

- 3+ years of work experience in measurement engineering, process engineering, visual inspection automation or related area.

  • MS or PhD in Optics Sciences, Metrology or similar would be considered as a substitute for years of experience.

  • Experience with Measurement Uncertainty Analysis, Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (GR&R), and/or Measurement System Analysis (MSA).
  • Work effectively in technical project teams in both leadership and team member roles.
  • Comfortable generating and delivering updates to leadership on a routine basis.
  • Experience using CAD software for generation of mechanical assemblies and drawings, optical and electrical schematics, and general design layouts.
  • General computer and networking knowledge.
  • Accountable for actions/behaviors.

  • Awareness of national and international standards relating to dimensional metrology and measurement uncertainty (e.g ISO GPS and ASME B89).
  • Machine Vision system development for manufacturing inspection applications (optics, lighting, cameras, image acquisition, and basic knowledge of image processing algorithms).
  • Working and demonstrated applied knowledge of fiber optic cable assembly measurement equipment related but not limited to: optical attenuation, reflectometry, surface profile interferometry, and video microscopy (end-face inspection).
  • Experience with computer-based measurement or automation equipment, design, setup, support and data systems architecture.
  • Demonstrated use of advance software for modeling and/or statistical analysis (e.g. MatLab and ZMax).
  • Knowledge of Zeiss Calypso, or other coordinate metrology software packages.
  • General SQL knowledge.
  • Experience in development of automated solutions to improve process controls (Including PLC programming).
  • Basic knowledge of plastic part mold making methodologies for effective integration with the Mold Development team’s strategy for rapid mold introduction and iteration.



Travel Requirements:

0-20% travel domestic and international (Mexico, USA, Poland)
