Scope of Position:

• Position is responsible to design and implement electrical control engineering solutions for a fast-paced Exhaust Aftertreatment Business. Primary responsibilities include supporting and improving our control and data acquisition systems in our engine test cells, associated laboratories and test vehicles. We have a diverse, flexible, dynamic, hands-on engineering team focused on practicality to insure that Corning Incorporated Environmental Technology products are developed and validated to meet our customers’ present & future needs.

 

• Corning Incorporated specializes in products to reduce particulate matter (PM), Particle Number (PN), NOx, CO and Hydrocarbons (HC) in engine exhaust. The Corning Environmental Technologies division produces aftertreatment control devices which help our automotive customers meet worldwide requirements for emissions reduction. U.S, European and Asian market regulators demand continuously tighter emission controls and Corning Incorporated is positioned to meet this growing market via product quality, increased capacity and improved product capability.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

The position is responsible for design, development, testing, and deployment of electrical control solutions used in exhaust aftertreatment test systems. Familiarization with commercial engine test cell control systems, programmable logic controllers (PLC’s) and high level languages such as C#, C++, and VBScript is required. The work will be primarily focused on the development of engine test cell and laboratory control and measurement solutions. Corning uses a wide variety of equipment and software from industry leaders such as AVL, Horiba, TSI, OMRON and others to instrument and control a variety of engine test cells and lab test benches. The individual is also responsible for development of advanced test control algorithms used to test and optimize performance of Corning Incorporated aftertreatment products. Familiarization with commercial off the shelf analytical software and high level control concepts such as adaptive, model predictive, fuzzy logic control is required. The work is both project and research based. The position is responsible to deliver advanced test control solutions to the Environmental Product Development group. Ongoing Tasks

 

• Develop and deploy test control and measurement systems for emission sampling, filter pressure drop, durability, regeneration, and NOx reduction systems to expand the aftertreatment knowledge base

• Develop and deploy cutting edge systems to control stability of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, engine operating conditions, active regeneration and NOx control.

 

• Collect and store in-situ and off-line physical measurements.

• Control systems with data and sensor validation, pattern recognition, fault classification and multivariable control applications

• Advanced control such as Model Predictive controllers, nonlinear control, and adaptive control including test modeling.

• Communication with devices/instruments using CAN, CCP, XCP, AK, TCP/UDP

• Novel control solutions developed using PLC’s, microcontrollers and custom electronic circuits. • Software and database design and Data mining / analysis tools using C#, Oracle, SQL Server

• HMI development using off the shelf tools and the internally developed WPF framework. Project Tasks

• Implement standard test configurations on commercial engine test cell control software.

• Design, develop and implement control and measurement systems with PID control; advanced control algolrithms; relational database interface; device drivers using CAN, CCP, XCP, PLC Controls (OMRON)

• Develop custom hardware and software solutions using solid engineering principles

• Research test control requirements needed to optimize Corning Incorporated aftertreatment system on customers diesel engines by implementing advanced control systems

• Integrate solutions into web based control applications where necessary Performance Expectations

• Confer with engineers, scientists, customers and others to discuss existing or new projects in support of product validation and testing.

• Design, implement, maintain, improve and document electrical instruments, equipment, facilities, components and systems.

• Plan and implement research methodology and procedures to apply principles of electrical theory to engineering projects.

• Ensure electrical safety in all existing and future equipment implementations.

• Test validity of solutions that use PID and advanced controls, distributed control and I/O, relational databases, GUI/HMIDesign

• Receive and transfer specific knowledge, skills and tools from the development organization to the worldwide engineering organization

• Maintain and further establish Corning's credibility in the areas of understanding engine technology and the role of the catalyst support in emissions reductions

• Interface with vendors on specifying and procuring various control components and systems to support projects

• Investigate prior art and document any Intellectual Property developed as part of project activities

• Regularly document project results through internal reporting procedures

• Present the project(s) for review by peers, customers and managers

• Report on project activities on a pre-determined basis. Ensure results meet the customer’s requirements and standards

• Maintain records and track expenditures against allocated funds. Estimate time required to accomplish tasks and monitor performance against schedules

• Execute project assignments with minimal supervision

• Prepare, present and publish technical papers in public forums to advance personal technical reputation and Corning Incorporated.

 

Travel Requirements: We support a limited number of aftertreatment test systems worldwide. Some international travel may be expected but less than 10% per year.

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: Work week is flexible but supports a 24x7 operation. 40-50 hours per week is typical.

 

Required Education:

BS Engineering (minimum) – Electrical Engineering or equivalent

 

 Required Skills:

• Experience with real time test and engine control

• Experience in distributed control and I/O

• Capable of providing solutions which require current and advanced control theory

• Experience with PID and advanced control implementation

• Research of test control requirements

• Experience with PLC’s (ladder logic) and high-level computer languages such as C#, C++

• Experience in systems engineering (control) including equipment design and specifications

• Electronics design, simulation and troubleshooting

• Strong experimental, instrumentation, and control skills to insure data is valid and traceable

• Organized, rigorous, independent

• Data analysis skills to insure data is correct at the collection point

• Basic control construction and instrumentation trouble shooting ability

• Good teamwork skills including knowledge transfer and communication

• Independent problem solving skills

• Able to make sound decisions by blending analytical thinking with practical judgment. Design review with supervisor and with team colleagues.

 

Desired Skills:

• Solid background in Electrical control systems, PLC’s and Microcontrollers

• Experience in engine and emission control systems.

• Experience in engine/vehicle system testing & modeling.

• Knowledge of substrate & particulate filter products and system application requirements

• Experience with public speaking & technical presentations
