Day to Day Responsibilities:

(1) Serve as Technical leader in development projects related to “value added” surface attributes, cost reduction, process improvement/ development, etc. across any or all of Corning businesses and S&T organization

(2) Execution of various types of experiments, centered around modification of glass surfaces with some form of aqueous media (specifically HF/ABF based chemistries); results compilation, analysis and communication to key stakeholders; both technical and non-technical in discipline. (3) Collaborate with resources from various disciplines (research, engineering, manufacturing, characterization, analysis, modeling). Work with Process Techs or be hands on (as and when needed) to perform experiments, lab maintenance and troubleshooting.

(4) Measurement of glass surface properties using several types of related metrologies including optical microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, laser scanning microscopy, ellipsometry, contact angle/SFE, Tribo-charge tests, etc.

(5) Effective documentation of internal reports, operating procedures, specifications, decision analysis, and changes.

(6) Defines opportunities for intellectual property creation and files invention disclosures and patent applications.  


Travel Requirements (please note if international): 10-30% Domestic and International travel depending on the project  

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40 hours/week  


Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration)

B.S./M.S. in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering/Materials Science with 2-5 years experience or PhD in similar fields with 0-2 years experience.  


Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess)

1. Experience in application of Chemical Engineering principles to treatment of glassy materials including chemical processing, etching and leaching, thermal processing, experimental design, statistical data analysis, etc. Lead in the design and execution of related workstreams.

2. Fundamental understanding of surface science principles including surface energy/wetting, adhesion, environmental interaction, aging/weathering, effective charge state, etc.

3. Knowledge of optical physics principles including but not limited to refractive/diffractive properties, optical flatness, interference, light propagation and scattering, etc.

4. Expertise in various wet and dry approaches to modification of glass surfaces (thin film growth, etching, nanoscale chemical modification, etc.) and familiarity with commonly used glass cleaning techniques

5. Data processing software such as Microsoft excel, Origin, etc. Microsoft PowerPoint proficiency

6. Working knowledge of Design of Experiments (DOE) experience/knowledge


Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess)

Familiarity with semiconductor type fabrication and testing methodologies (photolithography, thin film deposition, IV testing, profilometry, etc.) Knowledge of non-glassy based material systems such as semiconductors, metals, ceramics and organic materials Project management skills. Some experience with Manufacturing and Other Analysis Tools (KT) Six Sigma: Green or Black Belt trained

Ability to work in a team environment, and work with outside vendors, engineers, and technicians.
