Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

This position is for an Optical Scientist/Technologist working within the Characterization Sciences department of the Science and Technology division. The Optical Properties Laboratory (OPL) utilizes deep understanding of optical principles, concepts, equipment, and metrology to guide fundamental materials research and new product development. We are seeking a candidate having a sound understanding and hands-on experience with design, implementation, and operation of ultraviolet through infrared optical metrology techniques. The candidate must have experience and a strong interest in applying and advancing optical measurement methodologies to improve performance and expand capabilities to support a diverse portfolio of research, development, and production activities. This person will work with cross-functional teams conducting experiments to assess the optical properties of materials and relate the measured attributes to improving product design and performance. The candidate is expected to regularly perform optical analyses to characterize materials and develop new methods for non-routine measurements or processes as necessary.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

• Maintain safe laboratory practices

• Serve as a technical subject matter expert for group’s optical metrology capabilities

• Seek understanding of submitter/project technical challenges, goals and needs

• Identify and implement proper test methods, and develop new methods as required, to evaluate optical properties of materials

• Majority of time will be spent working throughout multiple optical labs characterizing material specimens using a vast array of equipment and techniques

• Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technicians to design and execute experimental plans to gain fundamental knowledge and address technical challenges

• Perform data analyses and interpretations

• Document and communicate results within reports

• Make recommendations to improve characterization methods, functional performance of materials or process conditions, as appropriate

• Collaborate on teams to foster ideation and development of new intellectual property

Travel requirements (please note if international): < 10%

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 40+ hours/week, 8am-5pm, with flexibility

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):

Bachelor's degree in Optical Science, Physics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering or related field.  Master’s degree preferred.

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates must possess):

• Experienced in optical properties measurements of materials including glass, glass-ceramics, ceramics, thin films, and polymers

• Extensive experience using UV-IR optical metrology equipment and techniques

• Experience using free space optics and breadboard components

• Hands-on experience aligning and operating lasers

• Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose equipment issues

• Ability to work across organizational boundaries from research to manufacturing

• Strong verbal and written communication skills

• Technically curious, self-motivated, independent, able to work with minimal supervision
