Scope of Position: 

Senior member of technical staff in Connectivity Research organization. Function as a subject matter expert to support research in the fast growing area of optical connectivity. Specific projects include novel connectivity technologies with a focus on development of high density fiber to fiber coupling, fiber to waveguide coupling along with related devices and solutions. • Participate and lead exploratory research in topics such as novel optical fibers, laser processing and laser based photonics devices fabrication, integrated photonics, quantum communications, and high resolution additive manufacturing. • Technical liaison to collaborate with development, business organizations and external partners.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work in a multi-disciplinary team environment to develop innovations in optical connectivity
  • Design and simulate high fiber count connectivity system and/or integrated photonics systems
  • Characterize devices and measure the performance of the system
  • Develop functional prototypes to verify design concepts
  • Interact with downstream development and business organizations to understand customer problems and transfer research findings.
  • Generate internal presentations, reports, intellectual properties and external publications


Education and Experience:

  • PhD degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics, or equivalent
  • Experience in designing, fabricating and testing optical fiber or photonic integrated devices


Required Skills:

  • Hands-on experience in fiber optics, waveguides, micro optics, or precision measurements
  • In depth understanding of fiber optic component technology
  • Packaging of fiber optic assemblies and systems
  • Experience with MATLAB, LabVIEW or similar modeling and lab automation software 
  • Ability to integrate fiber optics and photonics devices into functional prototypes
  • Ability to communicate effectively with external customers
  • Ability to lead a technical task and deliver results on time and on budget


Desired Skills:

  • Optical design software for ray tracing or integrated photonics modeling
  • Experience in silicon photonics and photonic integration technologies
  • Proficient in mechanical CAD tools and FEA simulation tools
  • Experience in fiber optic connector design and development
  • Reliability understanding and testing
  • Experience with laser processing of optical fiber devices
  • Design and simulation of active optical devices

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: • Standard Hours are M-F, 8-5. Flex time is supported
