Scope of position:

Research at Corning has created life changing technologies from low loss optical fiber to damage resistant glass and filters to reduce air pollution. We innovate from a deep understanding of emerging applications combined with unparalleled capabilities to design and manufacture novel materials at scale. We are seeking optical scientists and engineers looking to use Corning’s unique materials to develop optical systems. Candidates should have experience with optical architecture design, simulation as well as prototyping and measurements. This is an opportunity to work with talented interdisciplinary teams that span the globe.

 

This position, Senior Research Scientist, Optical Physics, is in the Applied Physics Research group at Corning’s Technology Center in Sunnyvale CA. The Applied Physics group works with customers and technology partners to understand the requirements of emerging optical applications and collaborates with materials scientists and optical physicists to develop optical components that enable best-in-class performance.

 

We are seeking candidates with a deep knowledge of the physics and materials science of nanostructured materials and diffractive optical components. Candidates should be familiar with electromagnetic-based modeling tools, nanofabrication technologies and precision optical measurement techniques. Our projects are fast-paced, and we expect team members to collaborate closely with material scientists, system designers and business teams across Corning.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Investigate emerging applications for optical metasurfaces and nanostructured materials.
  • Work with customers, partners and team members to determine requirements for new products
  • Develop system design concepts to meet optical performance and satisfy form-factor, environmental and manufacturing constraints.
  • Collaborate with materials scientists and component engineers within Corning and partner companies to meet challenging design requirements
  • Build and test breadboard & prototype devices in the lab
  • Invent differentiated components and sub-systems and protect with patent applications

 

Required Education: MS or Ph.D. in Optical or Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field.

 

Required Skills:

  • Experience using commercial and/or custom electromagnetic/physical optical design tools
  • Knowledge of electromagnetic/wave-based analysis methods and their limitations
  • Deep technical understanding of light-matter interactions, metamaterials and diffractive optical components
  • Understanding of nanofabrication techniques and their capabilities
  • Experience using programming/scripting tools such as Python, Matlab, Ruby, PERL, C/C++ Desired Skills
  • Entrepreneurial
  • Ability to learn new applications quickly and deeply
  • Experience working in technical and multifunctional teams including multiple locations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

 

Travel Requirements: < 20% domestic and some international travel required
