The Corning Specialty Materials (CSM) segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial segments that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

 

Purpose of Position: Performs a variety of technical duties and activities under general supervision to support Operations. Responsible for the daily reporting requirements of the assigned equipment and systems.

 

Major Responsibilities:

• Provide daily production support to resolve process upsets.

• Identify and lead process improvements to reduce cost, increase capacity, and extend capability (variability, cycle-time, complexity, and scrap reduction)

• Lead new product introductions into the production system.

• Engage the product development team during the development phase through informal and formal design reviews.

• Develop process flow charts, work instructions, process sheets, checklists, forms, and other required documentation.

• Collaborate with the commercial team to quote new products.

• Collaborate with the quality team to respond to customer complaints and returns.

• Assess existing manufacturing capability gaps and recommend development activities.

• Perform manufacturing tasks and activities, as trained, and in compliance with work instructions.

• Responsible for housekeeping and autonomous maintenance of work area and equipment.

• Participate in the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) and Critical Design Review (CDR) of all new product development.

• Participate in Manufacturing Risk Assessments and handle Risk Reduction activities.

• Work with production teams to evaluate and troubleshoot product returns and advise on corrective actions.

 

Education & Experience:

• B.S. in Engineering required – preferred degree in optical or mechanical engineering

• 5 to 10 years’ experience in manufacturing environment.

• Must be able to effectively work with production groups and division engineering.

• Mechanical, Optical, or Industrial Engineering training.

• Previous experience in technical manufacturing and process support.

• Desire to learn new technologies and become a SME

• We are seeking an aptitude for precision hands-on mechanical skills; experience with assembling close tolerance parts that may have unusual shapes or parameters

• Hands-on • Dedicated and willing to work off hours to ensure product is completed on schedule

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Function as part of a team

• Ability to learn and grow

• Prioritize and multi-task

• Performance excellence training and project leadership a plus - Green Belt, Lean, or PQA experience.
