Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Position Overview:
This role is part of a team responsible for developing and integrating Measurement and Inspection systems that support global manufacturing in ensuring product quality and compliance. It requires expertise in metrology, molding, and fiber optics manufacturing to provide technical leadership for engineering groups in automation and molding operations. Acting as a key metrology liaison, the position fosters collaboration across business units and research divisions. The ideal candidate should possess a strong technical curiosity across various technologies, a drive to learn, and the ability to work effectively with others in a global team to deliver high-quality Optical Connectivity solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Partner with cross-functional teams to define, develop, and implement measurement and inspection methods.
- Provide technical support for metrology operations, ensuring efficiency and reliability in manufacturing processes.
- Advise on equipment maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and corrective actions to prevent failures.
- Ensure metrology teams have the necessary resources and adhere to established operational standards.
- Train plant personnel on measurement system use and maintenance.
- Apply measurement uncertainty and system analysis techniques to optimize measurement applications.
- Conduct experiments, analyze data, and implement improvements for fiber optic assembly measurements.
- Assist in transitioning measurement technologies from development to manufacturing environments.
- Develop documentation, including machine specifications, operating procedures, and design packages.
- Collaborate with external suppliers to source and install testing equipment for production capacity expansion.
- Lead cost-reduction initiatives and measurement cycle time improvements.
- Oversee metrology operations at the divisional level and drive long-term solutions.
- Promote a safe work environment in metrology labs and manufacturing lines.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Optical Science, Engineering, Physics, Mechanics, or Mechatronics. A master's or Ph.D. in relevant fields can substitute for required experience.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years in measurement engineering, process engineering, or visual inspection automation.
Required Skills:
- Strong communication skills in English and Spanish.
- Ability to manage multiple projects with effective project management skills.
- Self-motivated with a strong initiative and ability to learn independently.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
- Experience with statistical analysis, experimental design, and metrology techniques.
- Proficiency with CAD software, SPC methods, and measurement system analysis.
- Ability to work effectively in a team and provide routine updates to leadership.
Preferred Skills:
- Scientific curiosity and problem-solving innovation.
- Experience in manufacturing environments and process improvement methodologies.
- Expertise in fiber optics measurement technologies, machine vision systems, and optical profiling.
- Familiarity with national and international metrology standards.
- Working knowledge of programming for automation and process controls.
- Experience with SQL, advanced modeling tools (MatLab, ZMax), and coordinate metrology software.
