Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Role Purpose

The purpose of this role is to design, develop, and optimize components in automated systems to enhance efficiency and productivity in manufacturing. The scope of work includes everything from conceptual design to implementation and ongoing support of component and automation solutions. Challenges involve constant innovation to keep up with the latest technologies and methodologies, as well as the ability to effectively and efficiently solve complex technical problems.

Applying mechanical and materials principles, part of the goal is to define the correct materials to be used to extend the life of components in the equipment, as well as the replacement of currently used materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop components for automated systems to improve efficiency and productivity in manufacturing.
  • Optimize component designs from conceptual phase to implementation, ensuring technical and economic viability.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and methodologies to ensure constant innovation in component design and development.
  • Effectively and efficiently solve complex technical problems, applying knowledge in mechanics and materials.
  • Define suitable materials to extend the lifespan of components and propose engineering changes to enhance performance.
  • Conduct finite element analysis and utilize design tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc., for component development.
  • Collaborate with tooling workshops, overseeing manufacturing processes such as CNC, laser welding, among others.
  • Interpret blueprints and tolerances (GD&T) to ensure accuracy and quality in component design.
  • Use high-precision measuring equipment to verify the quality and accuracy of manufactured components.
  • Collaborate with different departments and communicate effectively to coordinate the implementation and ongoing support of automation solutions.
  • Apply knowledge in control systems and PLC programming to integrate components into automated systems.
  • Adhere to relevant safety standards and industrial regulations at all stages of component design and development.
  • Stay updated with relevant certifications in mechanical design or automation to enhance skills and knowledge in the field.

Experiences/Education - Required

Education.

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Relevant certifications in Tool Room equipment-specific training are a plus           

Work Experience

  • Previous experience in mechanical design and component development, preferably in automated manufacturing environments.
  • Experience using computer-aided design (CAD) software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc., to create models and drawings of components.
  • Previous work in tooling workshops and familiarity with manufacturing processes such as CNC, laser welding, among others.
  • Experience in interpreting blueprints and geometric tolerances (GD&T) to ensure accuracy in component manufacturing.
  • Track record of working with high-precision measuring equipment to verify the quality and accuracy of components.
  • In-depth knowledge of materials and physical and mechanical properties, especially in relation to steels and their engineering applications.
  • Proven ability to effectively and efficiently solve complex technical problems.
  • Previous experience in the tools and automation industry, with an understanding of sector trends and challenges.
  • Compliance with relevant safety standards and industrial regulations at all stages of work

Experiences/Education - Desired

  • Experience in mechanical design and finite element analysis.
  • Profound knowledge of CAD/CAM and design tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc.
  • Experience and understanding of tooling workshops. Conventional machines, CNC, wire cutting, laser welding, electrode design.
  • Experience in blueprint interpretation and tolerances (GD&T).
  • Experience in handling high-precision measuring equipment.
  • Knowledge of materials, physical, and mechanical properties especially in steels for engineering change proposals.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to work in teams and communicate effectively with different departments.
  • Previous experience in the tools and automation industry.
  • Knowledge of control systems and PLC programming.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and industrial regulations.
  • Relevant certifications in mechanical design or automation.
