Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Position Overview:
The Mechanical Engineer will play a crucial role in designing, developing, and delivering robust, cost-effective production machinery and automation systems for Corning’s manufacturing plants. This individual will work closely with cross-functional teams to solve complex mechanical engineering challenges, define design specifications, and oversee the development of prototype and production equipment. The role requires strong collaboration with external machine builders, system integrators, and suppliers to ensure seamless implementation of manufacturing solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead or support engineering project teams focused on process machine and automation system development.
- Identify and resolve mechanical engineering and process equipment challenges.
- Define and document machine specifications, budgets, and performance standards.
- Develop and test mechanical designs, prototypes, and production equipment.
- Partner with external vendors to successfully deliver integrated machine systems.
- Generate and maintain construction and installation drawings that align with company standards.
- Participate in system integration, debugging, installation, and production startup.
- Conduct training sessions for plant personnel and ensure knowledge transfer.
- Provide regular project updates and track expenditures to meet budgetary constraints.
- Estimate time requirements for project tasks and monitor schedule performance.
- Execute project assignments independently within a team-based environment.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. A master's or Ph.D. in relevant fields can substitute for required experience.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years in the design and development of production process machinery, dynamic mechanisms, and / or automated systems
Required Skills:
- Strong technical curiosity to drive innovative solutions.
- Deep understanding of mechanical design practices, automation, robotics, and system integration.
- 5–10 years of experience in machine automation systems and process equipment development.
- Familiarity with electro-mechanical drive systems, fluid power, pneumatics, robotics, and safety standards.
- Ability to manage external machine builders and system integrators.
- Expertise in CAD (2D & 3D), Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing, and drafting standards.
- Experience with SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
- Self-motivated problem-solver with strong decision-making capabilities.
- Results-oriented with a commitment to excellence.
- English proficiency (85%+).

- Experience with standard computer modeling and analysis software.
- Understanding of precision engineering principles.
