Corning is one of the world’s leading innovators in materials science. For more than 160 years, Corning has applied its unparalleled expertise in specialty glass, ceramics, and optical physics to develop products that have created new industries and transformed people’s lives.

Corning succeeds through sustained investment in R&D, a unique combination of material and process innovation, and close collaboration with customers to solve tough technology challenges.

Corning’s Display Technologies segment manufactures glass substrates for active matrix liquid crystal displays (“LCDs”) that are used primarily in LCD televisions, notebook computers and flat panel desktop monitors.

    • Support display customer complex technical problem solving involving glass attributes; composition, mechanical reliability, solid and fracture mechanics.
    • Using engineering approach, define customer problem definition and develop leading hypothesis of potential root cause.
    • Validate technical hypothesis either through physical experimental or analytical modeling.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional commercial and technical team to provide timely customer problem resolution.

  • Perform measurement of glass interactions with display system and if necessary, develop analytical modeling capabilities.
    • Establish and implement experimental plan necessary to characterize glass performance and interactions in display system.
    • Develop analytical modeling capabilities for critical glass attributes. Depending on the technical problem statement, this could include first principle engineering calculation or analytical model like FEA (finite element analysis).

  • Lead Display Innovation special projects that could involve new product concepts, complex customer problem solving and other critical business related projects.
    • Take leading role in scoping, gain agreement among stakeholders and execute long range display projects.
    • Assess product requirements, match with Corning capability, potential technical solution path(s), competitive position together with appropriate RD&E resources.

    • MS or PhD in Glass Science, Material Science or Mechanical Engineering; preference for expertise in solid mechanics, fracture mechanics or FEA (finite element analysis) of brittle materials.

    • Preference for 5 years of industry experience; can be substituted for university research experience.

    • Wide range knowledge glass science and technologies.
    • Strong preference for individuals that enjoy innovation and aspire to be leading display technical expert.
    • Ability to operate in highly matrix organization with multiple reporting structures.  Ability to collaborative across functions; pulling in needed skills from research, development, engineering, commercial and manufacturing.
    • Strong problem-solving skills, ability to stay calm under difficult situations and communicate clearly across organization.

    • Preference for hands-on approach to problem solving and innovation.
