Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.


Position Title: System Engineering and Innovation Manager (Europe/Remote)

Location: Ideally this position resides in Europe (Berlin, Germany; North West, United Kingdom)


Scope of Position:


We are looking for an enthusiastic talented individual to join our ambitious global team to drive innovation within Corning’s Optical Fiber and Cable business. The successful candidate will have an exciting opportunity to work on emerging optical transmission technologies and product solutions in collaboration with both technical and commercial functions including research, product development, product line management, and marketing. The candidate will also strongly liaise with and support the sales teams globally, acting as a Subject Matter Expert on long-haul and subsea optical fiber technology.


Day to Day Responsibilities:  


  • Collaborate with Product Line Managers to define and drive long-haul terrestrial and submarine optical fiber and cable product and market access strategy  
  • Leverage knowledge in optical network architectures and system engineering to guide decision making on new optical fiber innovation and development  
  • Perform deep dive analyses into emerging communications technologies to determine strategic business impact and present associated business strategy recommendations to executive management  
  • Generate and deliver thought leadership content to the optical communication industry to reinforce Corning as a trusted industry technology leader (e.g. technical and white papers, value-selling and educational presentations, webinars)  
  • Act as trusted techno-commercial, subject matter expert in support of the commercial teams to drive advanced long-haul fiber sales worldwide  
  • Be a pro-active and effective bridge between the Business and Research / Technology  
  • Establish and maintain robust enduring collaborations with industry partners to secure broader awareness of advanced long-haul and submarine Corning fiber capabilities and advantages


Travel Requirements: up to 20-30% domestic & international travel


Required Education and Experience:  


  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in the field of Electronic and/or Electrical Engineering, or Applied Physics with at least 7 years of relevant industry work experience Or PhD in Optical Communications with at least 3 years of relevant industry work experience.  
  • MBA is a bonus, although not a requirement


Required Skills:  


  • Broad knowledge of optical fibers and communication systems  
  • Strong verbal and written English (knowledge of other major languages is a bonus)  
  • A pro-active self-starter with “can-do” attitude. Ability to meet objectives with high degree of independence.  
  • Willingness to travel internationally to attend conferences and internal/customer meetings


Desired Skills:  


  • Proven project management skills (planning, mobilizing people, driving action, managing progress, measuring performance)  
  • Experience in product value proposition development  
  • A “Natural Networker” – possesses the capability to build and leverage relationships with knowledge experts and leaders across technology, commercial and manufacturing.
