Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Optical Measurement Systems Engineer (m/f/d)

Scope of Position:
The Optical Measurement System Engineer is a hands-on engineering role within the Optical Components and Integration team, focused on the development, implementation, and optimization of optical measurement setups and associated processes for characterization of optical components and prototype assemblies.

The role combines optical design, experimental work, and data-driven analysis, with strong emphasis on lab-based development, ensuring reliable, accurate, and scalable measurement solutions to support R&D and early-stage manufacturing activities.

 

Key Responsibilities / Day-to-Day Tasks:

  • Develop concepts and architectures for optical measurement setups tailored to specific characterization needs
  • Design optical layouts for measurement systems including source, detection, and coupling strategies
  • Select and specify optical, opto-mechanical, and instrumentation components
  • Build, assemble, and commission measurement setups in the laboratory
  • Develop, implement, and maintain control software and automation for optical measurement setups (e.g., instrument communication, data acquisition, and measurement sequencing)
  • Perform precision optical alignment (fiber and free-space systems)
  • Execute characterization and validation measurements on prototypes
  • Perform measurement system analysis (MSA), including evaluation of repeatability, reproducibility, and measurement uncertainty
  • Perform root cause analysis and troubleshooting of measurement setups
  • Analyze measurement data using tools such as Python or MATLAB
  • Document results in technical reports and develop standard operating procedures (SOPs)

 

Required Education:

  • Master’s Degree or PhD in Optical Engineering, Optical Physics, Optomechanics, or a related field
    Required Skills and Experience:
  • 3–7 years of experience in optical engineering or experimental measurement development
  • Solid understanding of optical components and measurement principles used in the physical layer of fiber-optic communication systems
  • Strong hands-on laboratory experience with optical setups
  • Experience with optical alignment and precision handling
  • Experience with data analysis tools (Python, MATLAB, or equivalent)
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting capability
  • Knowledge of structured problem-solving and measurement methodologies (e.g., Six Sigma, Measurement System Analysis - MSA)
  • Fluent English (spoken and written); German language skills are a plus.

 

Desired Requirements:

  • Familiarity with relevant IEC standards for optical measurement and characterization
  • Green Belt Certificate.
  • Experience working in global, cross‑functional development teams.
