Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
For our Tech-Center in Berlin-Adlershof, Germany, we are looking for an
Optical Engineer - Optical Interconnects (m/f/d)
Scope of Position:
Development of optical systems, components and applications for next generation optical interconnect solutions for high-performance datacenter applications (Artificial intelligence and optical compute networks). Design products, processes and testing solutions for optical connectors, components and subassemblies primarily used for optical fiber to integrated photonics interfaces.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
- Contribute to globally impactful projects centered around the development and improvement of optical interconnects.
- Lead the development and prototyping of optical subassemblies specifically for fiber-to-the-chip applications.
- Responsible for the expert selection and thorough evaluation of optical components to ensure optimal performance.
- Design and develop new products and processes, and effectively manage their transition from prototype to production.
- Conduct comprehensive testing and characterization of optical interconnects to ensure quality and efficiency.
- Provide robust support for the development of fiber-optical modules and components.
- Compose detailed technical reports and specifications to document design processes, testing results, and product specifications.
Required Education:
- Master's Degree, or similar, in Electrical Engineering, Optical Physics or related discipline.
Required Skills:
- Minimum of 3-5 years experience in the optical communications, semiconductor, or photonic components industry, with a proven track record in innovation and product development.
- Hands-on experience in setting up and operating both semi-automated and automated assembly stations.
- Thorough understanding and practical expertise in the manufacturing processes of optical components, with a focus on quality and efficiency.
- Solid foundational knowledge of telecommunication laser sources, detectors, and optical fibers, with the ability to apply this knowledge in a practical setting.
- Demonstrated expertise in mechanical design, thermal modeling, and precision placement, with a focus on application in the optical engineering field.
- Proficiency in CAD design, specifically with ProE or similar software, with the ability to create and modify complex designs.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, particularly in Excel for data analysis and presentation.
Desired Requirements:
- Experience in quality management of processes (Six sigma)
- Experience in software programming (e.g. C, C++, Matlab, Labview, Phyton)
- Excellent English (spoken and written), German language skills is a plus

- Highly self-motivated, detail-oriented and organized.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Ability to contribute innovative solutions to complex technical challenges.
- Occasional travel may be required for collaborations or conferences.
