For our location in Berlin, Germany, we are looking for a
Precision Opto-Mechanical Systems Engineer (Process & Automation) (m/f/d)
Role Purpose
As a Precision Opto-Mechanical Systems Engineer for Process & Automation, you close the gap between early-stage manual opto-mechanical assembly and scalable industrial mass production enabled by automation.
Your mission is not to own manufacturing automation, but to identify automation-related requirements as early as possible in product development and translate them into automation-ready designs, processes, and assembly concepts. You need to enable significantly shorten internal and external automation development and industrialization cycles by developing a fundamental system and process design.
Working at the intersection of photonic product design, process development, and manufacturing in the field of co-packaged optics, supporting the transition from prototype builds to series production in close collaboration with internal teams and external partners.
Key Responsibilities
Opto-Mechanical Systems & Design for Manufacturing
-
- Design and develop precision opto-mechanical systems with a strong focus on Design for Manufacturing (DfM) and Design for Automation (DfA) from early development phases.
- Translate optical and mechanical requirements into robust, scalable system architectures, including tolerancing concepts suitable for future automated assembly.
- Design fixtures, tools, alignment concepts, and reference schemes that enable repeatable manual, semi-automated, and automated assembly.
- Define opto-mechanical interfaces and system architectures that support high yield and stable mass production.
Process & Automation Readiness
-
- Develop and transfer assembly and alignment concepts, bridging manual and semi-automated processes toward industrial automation.
- Identify automation-relevant requirements early in the development phase to reduce effort, risk, and lead time during later automation projects.
- Actively shape manufacturing concepts and process flows, focusing on automation readiness rather than operating automation systems.
- Collaborate closely with internal automation teams and external equipment suppliers to align product and process requirements, specifications, and acceptance criteria.
- Support the integration of motion systems, alignment strategies, metrology, and control concepts from a system and process perspective.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optics / Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
- > 5 years of hands-on experience with precision opto-mechanical systems, including assembly, alignment, and integration.
- Exceptional knowledge in using CAD to develop system designs, Creo preferred
- Strong background in opto-mechanical design combined with process development and industrialization.
- Practical experience with manual, semi-automated, or automated assembly systems, ideally including precision alignment systems.
- Solid understanding of manufacturing tolerances, GD&T, motion control, robotics, and kinematics.
- Experience taking products from prototype to series production.
- Fluent in English (spoken and written).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with optical fiber assemblies, fiber arrays, or co-packaged optics.
- Experience working with or specifying automation equipment for precision assembly (without owning automation execution).
- Knowledge of simulation or analysis tools (e.g. Ansis, Zemax) and/or scripting (e.g. Python,C++).
- Familiarity with structured industrialization methodologies (e.g. FMEA, DoE).
- Experience in high-precision, low-tolerance manufacturing environments.
