Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Senior Industrial Designer (m/f/d)

 

Position overview

We’re looking for an experienced and highly capable industrial design professional to join our global Product Experience Design Team. In this position you will play a key role in driving Corning’s product experience strategy and implementation, for a wide range of products, including connectors, adaptors, fiber closures, tools, and accessories. You will be facilitating the implementation of optimized user experience, based on user-/customer insights, and implement Corning’s visual brand language. For this role, cross-functional collaboration with mechanical engineers, manufacturing experts, product line managers, and other stakeholders is essential. You will be a key contributor to strongly differentiated, innovative, user-friendly solutions that clearly reflect the Corning brand, meet customer needs and adhere to technical and commercial requirements.

 

Location: Berlin, Germany

Hours: Full-time, 40+ hours per week (hybrid)
Travel: Ability to travel domestically and internationally required
Reports to: Head of Product Experience Design Group (global)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor- or master’s degree in industrial design / product design, or a related field
  • 5+ years of industrial design / product development experience with a proven track record of go-to-market products, represented by a strong portfolio

How you will make a difference

  • Represent Product Experience Design group in cross-functional projects.
  • Contribute to product definition and conceptualization, based on user/customer insights.
  • Be a key contributor in evolving Corning’s Product Experience Design culture.
  • Create 3D models and prototypes that demonstrate functionality and/or appearance.
  • Enjoy being hands-on and getting into the fields to gather insights.
  • Be a team player, participate in team brainstorming sessions and design reviews to contribute ideas and feedback to the global design team.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align design intent with project objectives and business goals throughout the project.
  • Prepare detailed design documentation and presentation materials.
  • Train, educate and advise on industry best practices for visual brand language, design thinking and user experience.

Skills for your success

  • Advanced capability for industrial design beyond superficial styling: analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, user-centric mindset and approach, passion and experience in optimizing practical ergonomics.
  • Hands-on design proficiency, including fast 2D/3D sketching, ideation and prototyping.
  • Expert-level 3D CAD surface modeling (experience with Creo is preferred).
  • High proficiency in Keyshot and Adobe Illustrator / Photoshop.
  • Solid understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, mechanical engineering principles, DFM/A.
  • High standards and passion for relentless shaping and optimizing design solutions and visual expression down o the last details.
  • Effective organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Strong English language communication and presentation skills, comfortable with collaborating within a global organization; German language skills are a plus.
  • Ability to inspire, convince, and drive design leadership through excellent verbal and visual articulation and assertiveness.

Work environment

  • Primary on-site / office-based, at least 3 days per week at our Corning Technology Center in Berlin Adlershof
  • Occasional business travel, primarily EMEA region
