Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
For our Tech-Center in Berlin-Adlershof, Germany, we are looking for an
Senior Optical Validation Engineer (m/f/d)
Professional development opportunities and a chance to contribute to cutting-edge optical interconnect technologies for advanced data center fiber‑optic applications.
Scope of Position:
The Senior Optical Validation Engineer is responsible for developing and driving product- and system-level validation strategies for passive optical components and assemblies within the Optical Components and Integration team. The role focuses on ensuring that validation methods, data, and conclusions provide robust evidence of product performance, maturity, and readiness for application-relevant use conditions.
This position combines validation strategy definition, experimental execution, and data-driven decision-making, with responsibility for establishing validation methodologies and acting as a technical reference for product and system validation across development programs.
Key Responsibilities / Day-to-Day Tasks:
- Define and implement product- and system-level validation strategies for optical components and assemblies
- Translate product and system requirements into structured validation plans, test matrices, and acceptance criteria
- Develop and qualify optical test methods for validation, including setup concepts, fixtures, and measurement approaches
- Ensure validation coverage across nominal, edge, and application-relevant conditions
- Drive validation of passive optical components (e.g., IL, RL, alignment sensitivity, uniformity) at component and system level
- Evaluate measurement system capability using MSA methodologies (repeatability, reproducibility, uncertainty)
- Analyze and interpret validation data to assess product performance, risks, and maturity
- Lead root cause analysis of validation failures and performance deviations
- Ensure alignment of validation methods with applicable IEC standards and internal requirements
- Document validation plans, methods, and results in clear technical reports and SOPs
- Act as technical reference for validation topics and support cross-functional teams in decision-making
- Drive continuous improvement of validation methodologies, tools, and processes
Required Education:
- Master’s Degree or PhD in Optical Engineering, Optical Physics, or a related discipline
Required Skills and Experience:
- 5–10 years of experience in optical engineering, with focus on validation, testing, or characterization
- Strong understanding of optical components and physical-layer performance in fiber-optic systems (e.g., insertion loss, return loss, alignment sensitivity)
- Proven experience in developing validation strategies, test plans, and structured validation methodologies
- Strong hands-on experience with optical measurement setups and experimental validation
- Experience with statistical analysis and measurement system analysis (MSA), including uncertainty and repeatability considerations
- Strong problem-solving skills with experience in root cause analysis for complex optical systems
- Ability to interpret validation data and derive clear, evidence-based conclusions
- Familiarity with relevant IEC standards for optical measurement and characterization
- Experience with data analysis tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB)
Desired Requirements:
- Six Sigma Green Belt or equivalent structured problem-solving background
- Experience in validation of optical systems in datacenter or telecom environments
- Experience working in global, cross-functional development teams
- Experience in defining qualification or release criteria for optical products
Soft Skills:
- Strong analytical and systems-thinking capability
- Structured, evidence-based decision making
- Technical leadership mindset with ability to influence without authority
- Clear and concise technical communication skills
- Proactive ownership of complex validation topics
- High attention to detail and persistence
- Continuous improvement mindset
