Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Senior Process Development Engineer for Fiber Optics Connectivity Solutions (m/f/d)

 

Role Purpose

We are seeking a hands-on, technically driven individual to lead the development and industrialization of new products and processes in the field of optical connectivity and co-packaged optics. This role requires a proactive engineer who can build processes and product from scratch, drive innovation, and lead new product introductions (NPI) from the first prototype through to mass production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical lead in cross-functional project teams to prototype, develop, test, and release new products and processes.
  • Develop and optimize processes for small series production and scale them for mass manufacturing.
  • Apply structured problem-solving methodologies (e.g., FMEA, DMAIC, DoE, KT) to improve product and process concepts.
  • Transfer NPI from the technology team to the engineering team using the Corning Innovation process.
  • Evaluate and select components based on customer requirements.
  • Introducing automation solutions where applicable
  • Stay current with trends in fiber optic technologies and advanced metrology.
  • Document and protect intellectual property through patent submissions.
  • Collaborate with international, multidisciplinary teams.

Required Qualifications

  • 5-10 years of working experience in industry is required.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering, Physics, Electronics, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Proven success in NPI projects from initial prototype to mass production.
  • Strong hands-on and R&D skills in building prototypes, troubleshooting, and sample preparation.
  • Experience in analyzing and scaling small series production.
  • Knowledge in mechanical or optomechanical assembly technology or advanced metrology.
  • Familiarity with quality management systems and Six Sigma tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Fluent in English (spoken and written).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Optical Fiber, Fiber Array Units, or Co-Packaged Optics.
  • Demonstrated success in implementing automation solutions.
  • Passion for innovation and creativity in technical problem-solving.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work across regional and cultural boundaries.
  • Excellent communications, interpersonal and influencing skills.
