Purpose of the Position:

Corning Pharmaceutical Technologies (CPT) develops glass packaging solutions for the pharmaceutical industry. The key responsibilities for this role focus on development of both incremental and next generation processes delivering capability, cost, and quality objectives through technical innovation. Applied technologies include the Glass Converting Process - automated flameworking process to turn glass tubing into Vials. Deliverables will require both individual and collaborative approaches, including partnership across S&T and the CPT Product Development, Reliability, Division Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and Commercial teams.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Assist with or lead glass forming experiments on the converting machine in Research (Sullivan Park, NY) and in Production (Big Flats, NY and Durham, NC).
  • Develop and test step change technology to drive down unit cost, improve yield, increase quality and work towards faster throughputs beyond what the industry sees today.
  • Develop proof of concept and prototype testing to validate design concepts.
  • Facilitate the creation of fabrication drawings, installation drawings, and ensure that final drawing packages reflect as-built conditions and satisfy Corning drawing standards.
  • Develop and test advanced process measurements that allow glass centric process control.
  • Actively participate in system integration, debug, and start-up.
  • Enable tools/systems that allow advanced controls that create a stable process with high CpK.
  •  Design and test next gen forming tools and converting equipment that reduce/eliminate flaws, enable faster throughput and provide a stable and repeatable process across production assets.
  • Develop fundamental understanding of glass forming tools for a wide range of product sizes that enable future products and open process window for improved glass quality.
  • Work on a collaborative team of process, mechanical, and controls.
  • Communicate results to leadership and peers.
  • Collaborate across development, engineering, and manufacturing organizations. to transfer technology from development to manufacturing scale environments.
  • Partner with Science and Technology to transition new capabilities from research to development and lead experimentation to demonstrate feasibility in application.
  • Define process requirements for next generation equipment through fundamental understanding, modeling, and prototype scale experimentation.
  • Collaborate with product development to design capable processes enabling new products attributes and customer focused solutions.
  • Document work through RTR’s, experiment reports, and invention disclosures.

Education & Experience:

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 3+ years of experience in equipment design role or equivalent educational experience (internship, co-op, etc.).
  • SolidWorks experience; preferably with EPDM as well.

Required Skills:

  • High level of technical curiosity that will enable unique solutions to technical challenges.
  • Interest and ability to learn, develop, and advance technical skills in mechanical design, process equipment development, and system integration.
  • Fundamental understanding of mechanical design practices, equipment fabrication and assembly, and mechanical systems troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated skills in 2-D and 3-D CAD (SolidWorks) and ability to apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • Experience resolving complex problems based on theoretical analysis and structured problem-solving methodology.
  • Ability to develop, scale, and transfer technology across research, development, engineering, and manufacturing.
  • Able to collaborate across organizational boundaries and integrate solutions.
  • Demonstrated leadership or teamwork in accomplishing common goals.

Travel Requirements (please note if international): Some travel in the valley (between Sullivan Park, Decker Building and Big Flats). Some travel to Durham, NC for experiments / process demos. Occasional travel possible to Europe for vendor visits, trade shows or internal meetings.

Hours of work/work schedule/flextime: M-F, business hours; flex-time possible. May need to support occasional off shift experiment.
