Scope of Position:

  • Responsible to lead the functional organization within CPT and be passionate about process improvement of chemical and secondary glass processes

  • Set direction on use of PCPD, MEE and other process tools
  • Leads the process setup and ensures manufacturing is operating with the best methods and conditions
  • Drives improvements for cost, product attribute and / or throughput
  • Works closely with manufacturing team to transfer technology and provide 2nd level troubleshooting and process support
  • Ensure run plan and experimental plans are thoroughly detailed and communicated in advance.
  • Grow organization and drive process as well as the use of Corning's best and proven methodologies (MEE, PCPD, KT, etc)
  • Build cohesive organization of direct and matrixed resources
  • Provide support to manufacturing to understand and foster process improvement.
  • Act as conduit to exchange key learning and improvement ideas across sites.
  • Partner with the Coating and IOX Development Managers to execute the technology strategy for the CPT secondary processes
  • Nurture critical attribute programs!
  • Define and lead cost reduction programs
  • Develop and implement standardization across production lines
  • Deliver production lines to the manufacturing facilities
  • Provide hands on leadership to own the Ion Exchange and surface prep processes for the division
  • Coordinate and lead the community of practice efforts between development, engineering and manufacturing
  • Support process development work with leveraged teams from MTE, S&T, and CPT Development
  • Manage the division engineering process improvement and cost reduction portfolio including forecasting and annual budget inputs
  • Works with CPT Development and manufacturing managers to provide inputs to the research portfolio for coating and chemical processing
  • Lead the startup and validation of new secondary processing mfg lines!
  • Develop and execute a PCPD program for the process areas process working towards process stability and ultimately running to equipment capability
  • Manage long-term relationship with strategic equipment vendors

A successful candidate will be:

  • A technical engineering leader with project management experience, apply project management when needed and engineering principles to complete projects on time and budget

  • Able to apply expertise and navigate problems associated with glass reforming or equipment automation
  • Manage the selection and integration of equipment/technologies
  • Provide regular portfolio and status updates to manufacturing leadership, division engineering manager and development managers
  • Hire, train and build a group to accomplish the business objectives as prioritized

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • System process development and engineering. Lead all activity related to achieving process objectives.
  • Technical analysis of processes. Application of analytical results to improving processes and meeting customer requirements.
  • Work with Research and Development for production and trials of new products, processes, and technology.
  • Collaborate with Plant Engineering to facilitate the introduction of new processes, products, and technology into manufacturing.
  • Participate on projects with impact on manufacturing process – execute to project portfolio
  • Develop new technology to improve manufacturing operations. New technology includes operational practices, raw materials, and process design.
  • Engineering Leadership – Lead and own 2nd level problem solving for Process and Technology including use of the proper troubleshooting tools – MEE/KT/etc
  • Technology Management – establish systems, structure, and processes. Process receivership from Development and migration to mfg sites
  • Process migration to manufacturing platforms
  • Orchestrate the design and implementation of process experiments.

Required Education:

  • B.S. – M.S. in Engineering field, Chemical or equivalent

Required Skills:

  • Minimum of 10 years of hands-on process engineering experience

  • Excellent process understanding with a background in chemical processing and automation of discrete processes
  • This is a functional position that requires strong technical curiosity, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to mentor and train others
  • Competent in problem solving and analysis tools, decision analyses, potential problem analyses.
  • Work well with other subject areas (process, mechanical, electrical engineering) and provide/receive direction
  • Ability to plan up front, communicate issues, and execute solutions quickly and efficiently
  • Ability to innovate in a diverse environment
  • Ability to multi-task and change direction and focus as needed
  • Ability to learn quickly
  • Mobility: Willing to travel

Soft Skills:

  • Ability to operate independently with limited guidance
  • Prior experience as a supervisor
  • Strong interpersonal skills – effective at interacting and presenting across varying payroll levels and different functional groups
  • Lead and work in a dynamic environment to solve problems and drive project work and technical discussions forward
  • Lead a technical team or provide technical leadership in a larger project team.
  • Identify roadblocks and anticipate hurdles before they can turn into problems.

Travel Requirements:

  • Up to 40% domestic travel required

  • On-site assignments at manufacturing operations

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Minimum of 40 hours and some weekend work is expected to support plant operation and/or projects
