Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Role Purpose

Corning’s OCS division is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Intern to join the Capital Portfolio and Analysis Group in Charlotte, NC. In this internship, you will support the management and optimization of capital portfolio projects, leveraging your skills in Power BI, data analytics, and project management. In this role, you will work closely with engineering to support the growth in the artificial intelligence market. Experience with operational excellence principles is a plus, as you will contribute to process improvement initiatives and drive efficiencies within the portfolio.  You will also work with cross-functional engineering organizations so engineering skills is required.

 

This internship offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience working on high-impact initiatives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment that supports the growth in the artificial intelligence industry.  This internship will also provide the applicant with critical engineering skills by working closely with project engineers to execute critical engineering projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Analysis & Visualization: Use tools like Power BI to create dashboards and reports that provide actionable insights into portfolio performance and project outcomes. 
  • Portfolio Management Support: Assist in tracking and managing capital projects, ensuring deadlines, budgets, and deliverables are met. 
  • Data Gathering & Reporting: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to collect, organize, and interpret data related to capital investments and project execution. 
  • Process Improvement: Contribute to the development and implementation of processes to streamline data analysis, portfolio management, and operational workflows. 
  • Stakeholder Communication: Prepare presentations, reports, and updates for internal and external stakeholders, ensuring clear and effective communication of project progress and insights. 
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, analysts, and other team members to support decision-making and strategic planning.  The candidate will also be required to work very closely with cross-functional teams.
  • Operational Excellence Initiatives: Contribute to process optimization efforts, applying operational excellence principles to improve efficiency and effectiveness of portfolio management activities. 
  • Ad Hoc Support: Assist the team with additional tasks and projects as needed. 

Skills and Qualifications

  • Engineering Principles Mastery: Demonstrated ability to apply core engineering concepts—such as Lean methodologies and process optimization—to drive project performance and operational improvements.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: Proficient in leveraging Power BI and other analytical tools to design, build, and manage dashboards and reports that inform engineering decisions and project outcomes.
  • Project Management with Engineering Rigor: Experienced in project management frameworks and tools (e.g., Microsoft Project and  Planview,), ensuring projects are executed with precision, efficiency, and adherence to engineering standards.
  • Advanced Data Analytics: Skilled in collecting, organizing, and interpreting complex datasets using engineering approaches and tools such as Excel and SQL, supporting continuous improvement and evidence-based solutions.
  • Operational Excellence (Preferred): Deep understanding of operational excellence principles (Lean, Six Sigma) and proven experience in applying these engineering methodologies to streamline processes and enhance quality.
  • Technical Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, enabling clear and effective dissemination of engineering concepts and technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Collaborative Engineering Mindset: Strong interpersonal skills for building productive relationships and fostering teamwork within engineering and cross-functional groups.
  • Attention to Engineering Detail: Meticulous approach to identifying inconsistencies, troubleshooting issues, and proposing robust engineering solutions.
  • Self-Driven Problem Solver: Capable of independently managing multiple engineering priorities and delivering results in dynamic, fast-paced environments.

Education Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Engineering or a related field. 
  • Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2026 (May-August 2026) with a graduation date of December 2026 or later
  • Be interested in working for Corning, Inc after graduation, if presented with a full-time job opportunity.
  • Be willing to work at the posted job location

​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly.  Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
