Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Overview

Corning’s Data Center Business Unit (DCBU) is at the forefront of designing and delivering fiber optic cabling infrastructure solutions for hyperscale and enterprise Data Center environments. As a Commercial Technology Specialist, you will serve as the technical bridge between customers (Oracle) and Corning’s product development and commercial teams — identifying network architecture requirements, supporting field trials, and helping shape the next generation of cabling solutions. This is a high-visibility, customer-facing role based in Charlotte, NC, with approximately 25% travel.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage directly with Data Center customers to capture network architecture requirements and map Corning’s cabling solutions — including Inside Plant (ISP) and Outside Plant (OSP) infrastructure — to customer-specific needs
  • Apply Voice of Customer (VOC) methods to quantify opportunity size, identify unmet customer needs, and develop Net Present Value (NPV) analyses to support product investment decisions
  • Support customer field trials and qualification processes, coordinating cross-functionally with Product Line Management (PLM), solutions innovation, and technology teams to drive adoption of new products
  • Identify and document customer pain points, competitive gaps, and emerging technology trends to inform Corning’s Data Center product roadmap
  • Partner with commercial account teams to develop customer-specific engagement plans and deliver technical presentations connecting Corning’s innovations to customer outcomes

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Business, or a related field
  • 2+ years of experience in the Data Center cabling infrastructure industry
  • Experience engaging directly with customers to identify network requirements and propose technical solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to support product qualification processes, including field trials and cross-functional coordination
  • Experience applying VOC methods or structured approaches to quantify customer needs and business opportunities
  • Ability to travel up to 25%

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the Hyperscale Data Center market and its technology architecture dynamics
  • Knowledge of fiber optic theory, products, and installation methods
  • Technical familiarity with Data Center switch connectivity, structured cabling, or Technology Vendor architectures and product interfaces
  • Experience developing NPV models or business case analyses in support of product development decisions
  • Experience working cross-functionally in a matrixed organization to execute project plans

The range for this position is $101,623.00 - $139,732.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
