Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.


Purpose of Position: The primary role of this position is to support outside fiber optic network design through GPS and measurement equipment in outside and sometimes inside environments. Encompasses the uses of GPS devices, ikeGPS survey devices, laser range finders, and measuring wheels to collect pole data, route information and right of way permit data. Position also reviews data collected by other teams to include contractors and assists in creating permit drawings in CAD. Contacts are primarily the immediate project team, other professionals and sometimes the general public.


Major Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Work in an outdoor environment to collect field data that supports the make ready engineering and design of fiber optic cable facilities.
  • Takes accurate field notes to complete staking sheets, pole permits, and right of way permits.
  • Prepare and submit organized, detailed data for each project to include GPS coordinates, span distances, attachment heights, guy lead lengths, etc.
  • Prepare customer and/or jurisdictional authority permit documents.
  • May also serve as a construction Inspector to ensure fiber plant is being installed in accordance with designs and Corning Standard Recommended Procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned


Required Skills: Understanding of and application of NESC standards as it pertains to vertical and horizontal clearance. The ability to develop and resolve solutions in a field environment.


Desired Skills: • Experience with NJUNS • CAD and 3GIS Experience • Familiarization with Corning Products • Knowledge of Procore Technologies Construction Management Software


Education and Experience Requirements: • High school diploma, 2-yr technical degree preferred. • 2-3 years installing telecommunications in aerial space; walking pole lines; and/or working on utility poles.


Travel: • 50% to 75% travel
