Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Position overview:  

Corning Optical Communications is seeking an experienced and talented Industrial Designer or Design Engineer to join our global Product Experience Design Team. In this role, you will collaborate with mechanical engineers, manufacturing experts, product line managers, and other stakeholders to support the delivery of market-ready solutions that clearly represent the Corning brand, meet customer needs and technical requirements. You will be supporting the design for a wide range of products including connectors, adaptors, fiber housings, accompanying tools, accessories, and aspects of packaging. 

 

How you will make a difference: 

  • Assist in the conceptualization and iterative development of fiber optic hardware solutions for various market segments 
  • Create 3D models and prototypes that demonstrate functionality and appearance 
  • Leverage time in the field to support customer insight research and value creation 
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions and design reviews 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align design intent with project objectives and business goals throughout the project 
  • Prepare detailed design documentation and presentation materials 
  • Train, educate, and advise on industry best practices for visual brand, design thinking and user experience 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor degree in Engineering required; Bachelor degree in Industrial Design / Product Design preferred 
  • 2+ years of relevant product development experience including internships or sponsored projects. 

 

Skills for your success: 

  •  Approach problems from many different angles and challenge the status quo. 
  •  Understanding of user-centric design, human factors, and ergonomics 

  • Good-to-strong digital sketching and visual communication skills. 

  • Proficiency in CAD software (experience with CREO is preferred) 

  • Proficiency in Keyshot and Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator 

  • Understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and engineering basics 

  • High standards and passion for detail and craftsmanship 

  • Dynamic in collaborative environments, great team player 

  • Able to execute within an established visual brand language across a broad portfolio. 

  • Effective organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines 

  • Strong communication skills—ability to clearly communicate design intent through written, drawn, and verbal direction to a diverse audience 

 

Work Environment: 

  • Office conditions with regular computer and phone usage. 
  • Light physical effort equal to frequent lifting or moving of lightweight materials. 
  • Infrequent visits to manufacturing facilities, labs, and the field where PPE is required.

The range for this position is $80,130.00 - $110,179.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
