Scope of Position:

The Intellectual Asset Analyst has COC global responsibility to:

  • Manage the invention disclosure (ID) intake and review process.
  • Provide patent search results and analysis in support of IP landscaping, IP strategy development, IP risk assessment and IP assertion opportunities.
  • Assist in the creation of trade secret inventories and drive the implementation of suitable trade secret protection measures at Manufacturing and Technology locations.
  • Provide other analytical and management support to IP Department, Technology organization, Commercial Technology and Product Line Management (PLM) as needs arise.


Invention Disclosure Intake and Review Process:

  • Pre-screen IDs and enforce ID quality. Return IDs to managers for remediation.
  • Approve acceptance of new IDs and provide database inputs for proper classification.
  • Manage review schedule and invitations.
  • Stage needed documents on SharePoint site and grant access permissions.
  • Assign follow up action items and track their progress.
  • Generate patent value rating remarks for IDs designated for patent filing.
  • Update ID status within IP management database.
  • Insure data integrity of IP management database with respect to ID status and classification.

In consultation with Intellectual Asset Manager:

  • Determine review committee members.
  • Run ID Review process and related forecasting, tracking and reporting.
  • Conduct ID review meetings and document outcomes/decisions.
  • Work with Product Teams to establish patent filing forecast and goal sharing targets.

Support of Patent Assertion and Risk Assessment:

  • Use patent search tools to create patent landscapes.
  • Use patent search tools to support IP attorneys in the construction of patent invalidity positions.
  • Use patent search tools support attorneys in making risk assessment/right-to-practice determinations for COC products and processes.
  • Use patent search tools to support patent assertion and enforcement initiatives.

IP Security and Trade Secret Protection:

  • Coordinate with Legal, Technology, Division Engineering, and Product Line Management to identify and inventory trade secrets for key processes and programs. Ensure trade secret value ratings are obtained and documented in relevant databases.
  • Participate with cross-functional team(s) in the development and/or refinement of trade secret protection policies and procedures. Lead or work closely with IP attorneys in assuring execution of the policies and procedures (administering/monitoring compliance). Includes conducting IP audits at manufacturing locations and technology centers. Identify risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Coordinate and help deliver education and training for protection of trade secrets and other proprietary information.

Other Support:

  • Support inventor recognition events and programs by querying IP Department database to identify eligible patents and inventors and provide other support as needed.

Travel Requirements:  Domestic and international travel (up to 20%) required.

Required Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology or other scientific discipline.

Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • Technological background preferably with some patent/legal background knowledge.
  • Experience in relevant materials/technologies/design engineering.
  • 3-5 years practical technical experience within the company.


  • In the company 7-10+ years and have established relationships within the COC Technology community.
  • Patent searching and analysis experience.
  • Significant experience writing IDs and/or involvement in invention and patenting process.

Required Skills:

  • Ability to maintain compliance with legal privilege, confidentiality requirements and other Corning global information security policies.
  • Technical competency to quickly understand inventions and effectively communicate with the Patent Committee and attorneys.
  • Broad familiarity of COC products and how they are used.
  • Ability to quickly develop an understanding of the potential impact or significance of inventions upon product value, performance, profitability, competitiveness and strategy implementation.
  • Able to research, analyze, assimilate and clearly report information to a variety of technical and management audiences.
  • Familiarity with (or ability to learn) the basic requirements of patentability and the patent application and prosecution process.
  • Able to develop and use processes.
  • Flexible to changing business conditions.
  • Experience with using and creating databases (IP Management and SharePoint).
  • Solid experience with MS Office software, especially Excel.
  • Experience with (or ability to learn) Derwent patent search tool.
  • Familiarity with Corning's Innovation Process.
  • Able to multitask, proactively work independently, and handle large workload volumes.
