SCOPE/PURPOSE OF POSITION:

  • Reporting to the Service owner of database technologies, the Database Architect Leader will provide strategic leadership and oversight for the transformation of Corning’s Database technology landscape to accomplish its 2025 Strategic Plan across all lines of business. The incumbent will provide thought leadership and expertise, influence leaders across the enterprise, exploit the benefits of the multi-cloud Database strategy to deliver innovative products to industry, and fundamentally transform Corning’s future.  The Database Architect Leader will oversee teams and guide the execution of the transformation roadmap helping to ensure delivery of all goals and benefits associated with the strategy.
  • Leverage technical and business acumen to provide superior design/architecture, development and production support for Database environments. In addition, will drive and participate in efforts to ensure platform stability to maximize performance of database environments. Partner with application owners/teams to understand application and business needs and SLO. Participate on LOE (Level of Estimate) design and AIC (Architecture Innovation Council) process to provide appropriate solution and level of estimates for execution for database solutions

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • The primary focus will be on designing & architecting database (Oracle, MS SQL, MySQL, RDS, SQL Azure, HANA etc.) solution to use based on business requirements, then designing, maintaining/supporting, implementing, monitoring and optimizing them. Responsible for integrating them with the architecture used across the company.
  • Develop the Enterprise Database reference architecture and standards that includes on-prem and cloud database deployments
  • Design strategies for enterprise database systems and set standards for operations, programming, scalability, reliability and security. Design and construct large relational databases. Integrate new systems with existing warehouse structure and refine system performance and functionality.
  • Oversee the work being done by other Database engineers working on the team, coordinating team activities with other teams and product groups, maintaining Database architecture standards.
  • Contributes in leading and directing database engineering resources to ensure timely and quality delivery of services. 
  • Identify, evaluate and recommend hardware or software technologies to achieve desired database performance. Monitor and report systems resource consumption trends to assure production systems meet availability requirements and hardware enhancements are scheduled appropriately.
  • Work with Customers, end users and development partners to define and assess technical requirements and understand the current state of technology to define opportunities that create business value.
  • Work with other architects to define the technical architecture structure to ensure that the products and components work together to meet the objectives and performance goals as required by the customer.
  • Using database expertise and leadership experience to identify and drive improvement efforts related to our database portfolio
  • Participate in Change Advisory Board and provide guidance governance on Database changes. Performing problem resolution for complex issues including root cause analysis, and outlining resolution options
  • Providing off-hours support, when required, for critical production issues.
  • Automate Infrastructure components leveraging understanding of scripting, coding and automation using one or more of the following: PowerShell, Microsoft DSC, Chef, Puppet, Ruby, Terraform, OEM or others
  • Have familiarity with SDLC models and use of source control and testing tools such as GIT, Jenkins, Chef, Terraform, RAT etc.
  • Provides critical thought leadership and expertise on best practices and approaches to ensure Multi-Cloud migration activities are executed successfully and on-time
  • Maintains technical knowledge on current and emerging Multi-Cloud developments, industry trends, assesses the opportunity, and collaborates with stakeholders to incorporate new trends and developments in current and future strategies
  • Bring a technology agnostic and open perspective in technical recommendations and decision making, being able to articulate and advocate for best technical solution that meets big picture business needs
  • Work with the third-party support team (on-shore and off-shore) and application support teams to educate and guide them for steady-state supporting database infrastructure related technologies

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • BS in Computer science or related field. Advanced degree in Computer Science, Business or related field a plus.

 

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Overall 10+ years working in IT, as a Database, Business Intelligence or Data Warehouse professional with at least 3 years as an architect.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Played pivotal roles as Lead Database Architect and support staff across various database technologies
  • Knowledgeable in database technologies – Oracle, MS SQL Server, MySQL, Cloud Databases (RDS, Aurora, MariaDB, Cosmos, Azure SQL etc.)
  • Exposure to commercial platform Database technologies from providers such as Oracle (Exadata/ExaLogic), Cloud Platform like ExaCloud, Netezza etc.
  • Experience in DevOps tools to enable DBaaS (Database as a Service)
  • Experience with supporting ERP systems like SAP S4/HANA and PeopleSoft etc.
  • Must have experience with Oracle 11g/12c/19c, MS SQL 2012/14/16/17/19, Oracle RAC, Oracle ASO, Partitioning, ASM, OEM, AlwaysOn etc.
  • Must have some understanding of data integration technologies and methodologies (API driven, ETL tools like Data Stage, Golden gate, Oracle Data Integrator etc.)
  • Be very comfortable with Agile methodologies in order to be able to arrive at difficult engineering decisions quickly
  • Must have had experience creating solutions or solution concepts and defending these with technology councils / architect groups
  • Worked in projects to integrate enterprise data with high volume and velocity 2nd or 3rd party data from other sources such as Social channels or 3rd party sources
  • Should have experience of working in Manufacturing Industry (or similar) to understand the data security requirements like ITAR/PCI/PHI/HIPPA/NIST/SOX etc.
  • Effective leadership, organization, and planning skills, with ability to handle changing priorities
  • Excellent communications, interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Demonstrated track record of on time delivery within budget; ability to drive projects to successful conclusion using influencing tools
  • Ability to lead international teams across multiple initiatives that span various lines of business, geographic borders, time zones, and cultures
  • Must be a self-starter, able to work in team environment and motivate others
