Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Purpose of Position:

Create accurate and effective NDS, and/or CAD designs for FTTX (fiber to the home, fiber to the business, etc.). Create complete BOM (Bills-of-materials) for Corning and non-Corning material orders where applicable. Team Lead a small group of designers to complete FTTX designs for a specific market/ customer.

 

Key Responsibilities:

• Participate in scope review with customer and/or vendors to ensure design requirements and output are understood thoroughly

• Develop a training program to introduce basic functions to new users and a plan for continuous development of Lumen system users.

• Resolve system issues within the Lumen system from the OLT to the ONT.

• Create polygon or distribution area in conjunction with customers when required.

• Create drawings in NDS, enter information in Fireworks, reserve fibers in TIRKs, and other functions within Lumen systems to complete the “Post to the Top” sequence.

• Assemble design in the most cost-effective method with understanding of the impact of construction and material cost and the optimization of Corning specified materials

• Use fielding data, photos, and sketches to create the design and provide feedback to walkout crews where questions remain

• Occasional site visits to obtain necessary design information and confirm design requirements with the customer will be required

• Ensure obstacles such as culverts, waterways, easements, aerial trespass, etc. are accounted for in the design

• Create splicing schematics and permit drawings for customer or internal permitting group depending upon requirements – provide ongoing support for the permitting process

• Review Post-Construction Red-lined documents, and update/revise client design systems with any changes

• Update “as builds” per construction prints

• Organize, record, & communicate project schedules & timelines to internal project manager(s)

• Fulfill requirements for project summary documents and distribute as necessary

• Communicate progress and completions to the business development team for invoicing purposes using Procore

 

Education Requirements:

• Bachelor of Science degree in an Engineering discipline, Mechanical or Electrical preferred

• Minimum of 10 years Fiber Optic technical experience

• Minimum of 5 years in NDS.

• Or will consider High school diploma or GED and minimum of 15 years Fiber Optic technical experience with a minimum of 6 years in NDS of which 6 months of which is Quantum Fiber Standards.

 

Required Skills:

• Successful candidate will have experience with additional Lumen/CenturyLink systems, such as Fireworks, TIRKS, WFMT, BIWF, ARMOR, ASPEN, etc.

• Experience resolving ISP connection issues in NDS

• Intermediate Project Management Skills & Practices

• Must be able to read colors on screen and on paper

• Must be an effective communicator, able to deliver messages through various methods.

• Fluent Language Skills in English both spoken and written.

• Demonstrated ability to manage tasks effectively in an actively changing environment.

• Results oriented with a high commitment level to task completion.

• Willingness to work outside of normal scheduled business hours when necessary.

• Sound problem solving and decision-making processes and skills.

• Dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of both internal and external customers.

• Understanding of RUS Codes (Rural Utility Service)

• Team leadership or peer to peer team lead experience desired.

• Ability to organize and coordinate work schedule and duties.

• Proficiency in using Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint.

• Technical writing ability, with emphasis on effective presentation of detailed concepts.

• Knowledge of construction and project planning procedures.

• Significant knowledge of Fiber Optic products, esp. Corning FTTx products

• Field experience with fiber optic products (FTTx) and processes such as cable handling, fiber splicing, connectorization.

• Design support provided will leverage commercial sensitivity to achieve technically sound customer deliverables while enhancing business relationships

Additional Requirements:

• Person must be willing to remain in this position for a minimum of two years.

The range for this position is ($85,000 - $118, 000). Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
