Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Scope of Position

The purpose of this position is to collaborate, design, validate and implement packaging solutions that encompass 3 key areas around cost savings, sustainability and enhancing customer experience when interacting with packaging. All of these areas are integral parts of the OCS Packaging Program within Corning and include the standardization and optimization of existing packaging solutions to deliver improvements in cost, capability, and quality, and providing manufacturing and commercial support for packaging related issues. The Packaging Engineer will be dedicated to the HSDC operations and collaborate with internal and external partners to identify appropriate packaging materials and develop packaging designs that meet specifications and customer requirements. The Packaging Engineer will work with internal cross functional team partnerships - including Product Line Management, Sourcing, Engineering, Supply Chain, Logistics, Sustainability, customer facing roles and key packaging suppliers to achieve functional packaging and support Corning OCS Packaging Program KPIs. Dedicated to HSDC and supporting the plant operations by ideating, defining the best materials and validate packaging solutions within the OCS Pkg Program of innovation and cost savings initiatives.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities

  • Dedicated to HSDC ideating, defining the best materials and validate packaging solutions within the OCS Pkg Program of innovation and cost savings initiative supporting the plant operations
  • Understand the total cost of packaging, including but not limited to materials, manufacturing, distribution, transportation, and sustainability.
  • Provide technical expertise for packaging materials, design and interface with manufacturing, technology, quality, logistics, and commercial functional groups
  • Identify and execute packaging improvement opportunities to deliver cost, quality, and capability improvements for new and existing products within HSDC, supporting the operations
  • Define and develop new package requirements for the implementation of innovative and cost-effective packaging solutions (cardboard, foams, plastic, wood)
  • Qualify new package designs and ensure product reliability
  • Generate appropriate technical documentation to support packaging design and process changes
  • Interface with packaging material solution vendors to identify and develop potential packaging solutions
  • Share best practices and collaborate with other packaging engineers within and across global regions
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to packaging interns located in Charlotte office
  • Provide technical expertise to support manufacturing packaging issues or customer quality related issues related to packaging

 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering or Engineering of a comparable discipline from accredited university program preferred.
  • Entry Level packaging engineering role (A band)
  • Experience with at least one completed 6 month pkg co-op internship

  • Demonstrated knowledge of packaging processes, designs, and materials
  • Project management skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency with supporting cross functional projects
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to analyze and use historical and experimental data to determine optimum solutions
  • Knowledge of green/environmental packaging materials and recyclability/ reusability
  • Advanced English verbal and written skills
  • Advanced MS Office proficiency
  • Strong team skills, able to interact well with others

The range for this position is  $65,037.00   -  $89,426.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
