Odds are that the email you read this morning travelled over Corning Optical Fiber; the smartphone you used had a Corning cover lens; and the vehicle you took to work had cleaner emissions because of a Corning catalytic substrate. Corning is one of the world’s leading innovators in materials science. For more than 160 years, Corning has applied its unparalleled expertise in specialty glass, ceramics, and optical physics to develop products that have created new industries and transformed people’s lives. Corning succeeds through sustained investment in R&D, a unique combination of material and process innovation, and close collaboration with customers to solve tough technology challenges. Software development, data, automation and advanced analytics capabilities are drastically transforming research and manufacturing beyond labs and point process automation to modeled, systemic, highly contextualized and data driven systems. Corning is building and adopting the foundational digital capability for these company-wide efforts, and are looking for passionate, hard-working, and talented software engineers that will design that foundation for reuse, velocity and scale.

Overview

As a Principal Software Engineer for our Enterprise Application Development Platform, you are an expert level Go software engineer that will work directly with the Platform Product Owner, Application Platform Foundation to design and build a global scale, enterprise grade, self-service application development platform for the company. The application platform foundation will serve as the main interface to Corning’s systems or record as well as our digital platforms for advanced analytics. This platform will also support global self-service enterprise application development by enabling multiple classes of developers across the company to self-serve their enterprise app development needs on an ongoing basis.

Responsibilities You will play a crucial role in enabling global scale enterprise application development at Corning, by:

• Designing, developing and evolving a Go-based distributed foundation layer for the enterprise application platform, using agile development practices, hybrid computing and service mesh. You will work in collaboration with other development team members, our Value Acceleration team and the broader enterprise IT community. This foundation layer provides a common pro-coded and supported interface for multiple classes of enterprise applications, located between source enterprise systems of record, other digital platforms, and the self-service app development layer.

• Designing, developing and evolving development frameworks that will be used to create guardrailed development experiences that are tailored to specific classes of applications and the four distinct target classes of enterprise app developers that will use them: o “pro-coders” who are full-time professional software engineers that are well versed in production-grade software development practices for large-scale multi-tier systems, front and backend development, design patterns and software lifecycle management o “domain developers” including data scientists, modelers, advanced controls engineers and developers working within a specific programming domain, often involving domain-specific languages o “citizen developers” which make up the largest group of users, and that will access the application platform foundation via a low-code environment such as the Microsoft Power Platform o “IT developers” responsible for ensuring all development efforts supported by the application platform meet operational and compliance expectations (e.g., availability, privacy, security, identity, IP protection)

• Debugging production issues across services, at all component levels

• Using our agile toolchain service offering for your day-to-day activities and work to continually improve it

• Delivering and presenting proofs of concept implementations that explain the key technologies you have selected for your design and the recommended patterns of practice for ongoing development and lifecycle management. The target audience for these efforts span the company

• Working with the relevant communities of practice on component roadmaps, and serving as a trusted committer for your code for inner sourcing efforts with other development teams in the company

• Working with your fellow developers using agile development practices, and continually improving development methods with the goal of automating the build, integration, deployment and monitoring of the platform • Lead, train, and mentor others with your expertise on the designs, architecture, and methodology you create.

Education & Experience

• Advanced degree in computer science, or an equivalent level engineering, or mathematics degree, a technical undergraduate degree and relevant experience will also be considered

• Demonstrated expert level proficiency in Go, with a minimum of 5 years of professional Go programming experience designing distributed systems

• At least 10 years of professional programming proficiency in C++ or one modern JVM language (e.g. Java, Kotlin, Scala)

• 5+ years of full-stack experience developing large scale distributed systems and multi-tier applications

• 2+ years of production DevOps experience

• Demonstrated experience working with inner sourcing initiatives, serving both as a trusted committer and contributor

• Strong technical collaboration and communication skills

• Unwavering commitment to coding best practice and a strong proponent of code review

• Cultural bias towards continual learning, sharing best practice, encouraging and elevating less experienced colleagues as they learn

Other Qualifications

• You must enjoy challenging engineering problems. We are looking for someone who can solve complex issues

• Proven success working in a highly matrixed environment.

• Must demonstrate a proven willingness to go the extra mile, to take on the things that need to be done and maintain a positive attitude that can adapt to change.

• Strong leadership and excellent verbal and written communications skills, with the ability to develop and sell ideas.
