Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.


Role Purpose:   Develops and executes the Ribbon Cable product line strategy that supports the achievement of desired product line sales growth and profitability.


Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science (4 year) degree or in business with analytical background and strong potential for technical learning.
  • Minimum of 5 years work experience product line management, marketing, manufacturing, or engineering in an engineering based and customer-focused environment.
  • Demonstrated track record of managing projects and leading multi-functional teams
  • Work experience in a commercial function


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a cross-functional product team consisting of functional leads from Development, Product Engineering, Applications Engineering, Manufacturing, Marketing and/or Sales to:
    • Develop the product line’s market value proposition and pricing strategy
    • Develop and execute the product line planning process, including the identification of critical projects to be undertaken for the year
    • Find the optimal solution (balancing the needs of Corning and the customer) to all product issues related to performance (i.e., specs, attributes, services), quality, share growth, customer needs (contract management)
    • Create an intellectual property and standards strategy for the product line
    • Understand downstream market requirements and assess competitive threats and implications for the business
    • Create/manage short and long-term forecasts and coordinate with Sales & Marketing and Supply Chain
  • Works with Program Management and Business Development to identify and create  new products, and the associated value propositions
  • Prioritizes the development opportunities for the product line.
  • Develops the product line strategy and manages the product line through the stages of innovation, from product concept through commercialization and life-cycle management
  • Works with Manufacturing and Sales to identify opportunities to reduce complexity and implement cost reductions
  • Works with the Standards group to set and drive the standards strategy for the product line
  • Addresses new product/special requests by developing a business case (including P&L and balance sheet implications) to determine the feasibility and pricing requirements of the requests
  • Owns and optimizes, or may work with the Pricing Manger to optimize, pricing levels by setting floor price, establishing pricing structure, optimizing product premiums, and ensuring value received for product line
  • Works with Account Management to develop value propositions that improve margins for Corning’s products and services and enable new/enhanced selling opportunities with customers
  • Manages the obsolescence process, as necessary, to extract maximum value through the end of the product’s lifecycle
  • Oversee, develop, and direct a ribbon product line team

  • Data Gathering and Analytical Skills: Understands critical issues and implications of the product line strategy and secures requisite analyses to support well-informed strategy development, Seeks information from multiple internal sources to define and quantify product related issues, Has a clear idea of what information is required vs. desired and how adjustments can be made to address data gaps, Recognizes important patterns, trends and themes in information, Uses frameworks, models and checklists to ensure all aspects are checked or considered

Desired Skills:

  • MBA or equivalent demonstrated experience (i.e., extensive experience in business) is a strong plus.
  • Experience managing people
  • Work experience in Manufacturing, Development, and / or in a Strategy group
  • Financial analysis and accounting experience
  • International business work experience
  • Participation in, or leadership of, multicultural and/or multi-geographic projects
