Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Scope of Position:
The Product Sustainability Specialist supports Corning Optical Communications’ product sustainability capabilities by executing key workstreams such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), and product-related sustainability metrics and reporting. The Specialist partners with product, engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and commercial teams to gather data, maintain documentation, and embed repeatable sustainability practices into product development and business processes. This is an individual contributor role supporting the execution of the product sustainability roadmap and reports to the Product Sustainability Manager.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
- Support development and maintenance of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for priority products, aligning with applicable standards (e.g. PEP ecopassport®) and internal guidance.
- Support and continuously improve data collection across functions and suppliers (as needed) to ensure LCA/EPD inputs are accurate, complete, and traceable (e.g., material composition, energy, yield, scrap, transport, packaging).
- Execute cradle-to-gate and cradle-to-grave LCAs for products and processes using established methodologies and tools (e.g., ISO 14040/14044), under guidance of the Product Sustainability Manager.
- Analyse life-cycle results, identify environmental hotspots, and prepare clear summaries and visuals for internal stakeholders to support product, process, and procurement decisions.
- Maintain EPD and LCA documentation packages (assumptions, data sources, calculation files, version control) to support auditability and internal governance.
- Monitor evolving customer requests, EPD program operator rules, and relevant product sustainability regulations/standards; summarize implications and required actions for COC products.
- Support engagement with industry partners and third parties (e.g., LCA reviewers, EPD program operators) and represent the function in internal and external working sessions as requested.
- Support development of templates, guidance, training materials, and standard work to improve adoption and consistency of product sustainability practices as needed (e.g. Design for Sustainability, decarbonization, sustainability claims, circularity, etc.).
- Ability to work with cross-functional stakeholders to translate technical and operational data into sustainability metrics, analyses, and documentation.
Education and Experience - Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science/Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Sustainability, or a related technical field with 2+ years of relevant experience in product sustainability, LCA/EPD, environmental compliance, or related analytical work.
- Experience performing LCAs and/or supporting EPD development (academic, internship, or industry experience); familiarity with ISO 14040/14044 and common LCA software and databases preferred.
- Demonstrated intellectual curiosity and creative problem-solving, with openness to innovative and non-traditional approaches.
- Ability to manage, synthesize, and analyze large, complex data sets to generate clear insights and support decision-making.
- Project management expertise, including planning, prioritization, and execution across multiple workstreams and stakeholders.
Education and Experience - Desired
- Strong preference for experience with Sphera LCA for Experts software; familiarity with other LCA tools and databases is also valued (e.g., SimaPro, openLCA, ecoinvent).
- Experience writing EPD reports and following EPD program operator requirements and processes, with preference for experience with PEP ecopassport®.
- Experience automating data workflows and/or complex, cross-functional processes (e.g., data pipelines, templates, dashboards, Power Query/Power BI, or workflow automation tools).
- Relevant certifications a plus (e.g., Certified Life Cycle Assessment Professional, PMI CAPM/PMP).
- Experience building or supporting sustainability data workflows in Databricks and/or SAP is a plus.

The range for this position is $81,894.00 - $112,604.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
