Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.


Automation Controls Engineer

Position will serve as manufacturing electrical controls resource for the Automation Engineering group in Corning’s Concord, NC facility.  Main responsibility is to ensure that complex manufacturing equipment and processes meet daily production requirements in terms of safety, quality and, reliability.  Develop improvements for production equipment and participate in automation projects.  Participate in synchronization efforts by actively receiving new technology and processes.  Seek out and implement cost reduction opportunities.  Candidate should be versed in various controls platforms, and manufacturing engineering principles. 



  • Provide high quality process support for a fast-paced 24 x 7 manufacturing environment.
  • Track daily production/quality metrics and plan reactionary measures as needed.
  • Own performance of key attributes: develop and maintain tracking tools, report out on daily discrepancies, and manage long term performance.
  • Extensive experience with various electro-mechanical systems.
  • Ability to lead improvement initiatives and small-scale automation projects
  • Equipment and process troubleshooting skills. 
  • Work closely with support technicians to resolve equipment issues.
  • Provide incremental training on new equipment or process changes as needed.
  • Ensure all equipment and processes are safe to operate.  Understanding of NEC and other pertinent safety codes.
  • Ability to work across various functional groups on a daily basis to accomplish goals: Operations, IT, Facilities, Project Engineering, QE, etc.




B.S. or M.S. Mechatronics Engineering, or Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering with demonstrated controls aptitude, and 5 or more years’ equipment/controls experience in manufacturing.


  • Experience with Allen Bradley controllers and associated hardware including: PLC and I/O devices, motion control, various communication protocols, field wiring and disconnect devices.
  • Ability to debug and monitor PLC code – both ladder logic and structured text.
  • Knowledge and experience with Fanuc Robots and TPP.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude. 
  • Experience with various electro-mechanical devices such as; servo motors, valves, sensing devices and conveyors.
  • Experience with industrial vision systems and scanning devices.
  • Ability to generate and interpret electrical drawings using AutoCAD Electrical.
