Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
The Controls Engineer position will serve as an Electrical/Instrumentation engineering resource for the Chemical Technology department in Corning’s Concord, NC facility. Main responsibility is to ensure that complex manufacturing equipment and processes meet daily production requirements in terms of safety, quality, and reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide high quality electrical and process support for a fast-paced 24 x 7 manufacturing environment.
- Own performance of key attributes: develop and maintain tracking tools, report out on daily discrepancies, and manage long term performance.
- Application of controls theory to solve challenging process control and monitoring problems.
- Troubleshoot and resolve controls/electrical-related issues that arise with critical support systems.
- Provide support for Emergency Response Drills involving failure of critical facility support systems.
- Work closely with support technicians to resolve equipment issues.
- Provide training and coaching on equipment controls or process changes as needed.
- Understanding of NEC and other pertinent safety codes.
- Lead field support teams during the installation and checkout of new technology and designs.
- Develop and document Preventive Maintenance procedures for electrical/controls aspects of facility support systems.
- Lead small to medium capital projects as well as Six-Sigma DMAIC or DESGN Performance Excellence projects.

Hours of work/work schedule/flextime:
8-10 hours/days; 40-50 hours/week. This position requires off-hours coverage on nights and weekends on a rotating basis with co-workers.
Experiences/Education - Required
- B.S. Electrical Engineering/Technology or Chemical Engineering degree with equipment/controls experience.
- 3-10 years' experience
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Strong demonstrated experience with industrial controls, field instrumentation, HMI software, PLC code, and control platforms.
- Experience with various motion control devices, I/O devices, field wiring and disconnect devices.
- Knowledge of closed loop control systems and PID tuning.
- Sound understanding of AC/DC electrical theory, and practical application thereof.
- Experience with various electro-mechanical devices such as; servo motors, valves, sensing devices.
- Ability to generate and interpret electrical drawings using AutoCAD Electrical.
- Understanding of Six Sigma techniques.
- Knowledge of ANSI standards, NFPA and NEC applicable Electrical Codes.
- Grounding and shielding of electrical systems.
- Experience writing PC based applications in C# or similar languages
- Experience producing controls systems that interface with SMAR
- Structured text programming

The range for this position is $102,045.00 - $140,312.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
