Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.


Job Responsibilities: 


Specific job responsibilities will depend upon the active project and may include but are not limited to:


  • Design, develop, and implement advanced process controls solutions for manufacturing processes.
  • Evaluate existing process control strategies and propose and develop enhancements; this could be enhancing PID control-based strategies with cascade control, feedforward, gain-scheduling, etc. or applying a different, more-suitable model-based control algorithm (i.e., model predictive control, internal model control, etc.).
  • Work closely with manufacturing to define appropriate hardware and software platforms for implementing process control solutions.
  • Leverage process controls skill set to implement solutions in existing PLC/DCS environments.
  • Develop in-depth knowledge of existing processes to identify process control opportunities and write proposals to initiate controls projects.
  • Work with process subject matter experts and apply data analytics/machine learning to gain fundamental process understanding.
  • Lead projects and work in a multi-disciplinary research, development, and engineering environment to identify opportunities for advanced controls.
  • Facilitate the transfer of new process control into manufacturing and provide training to manufacturing and engineering personnel.
  • Develop a strong network of stakeholders across all OFC manufacturing and engineering locations, research and development, Manufacturing, Technology and Engineering (MT&E), other Corning business units, and key vendors.


Travel Requirements:  


  • Possible international and domestic travel as much as 25%


Required Education:


  • Masters or PhD in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering with heavy coursework focus on Advanced Controls, Data Analytics, or Optimization.


Required Years of Experience:


  • 1 -5 years of experience in industry on manufacturing processes.


Required Skills:


  • Familiarity with a diverse array of process controls technologies ranging from classical PID control to modern control techniques.
  • Practical application of classical control theory, including PID control loop tuning.
  • Programming experience in Matlab/Simulink.
  • Ability to translate advanced control process solutions into PLC code and/or real-time control applications written in C or C++.
  • Controls-oriented modeling (system identification).
  • Ability to learn a process quickly, that includes identifying process variables, existing controls solution, process specifications and limitations.
  • Strong verbal and written skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prepare and present effectively to audiences from different backgrounds.


Desired Skills:


  • Strong technical curiosity with desire to take on challenging technical problems.
  • Familiarity and/or coursework in signal processing.
  • Experience working in or leading cross-functional teams
  • Background in basic machine learning
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with computer vision and image analysis.
  • Experience with SCADA systems (iFix, Wonderware) and OSI PI data historian.
