Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position: As our Department Head, you will Lead the Fiber making Engineering department (Forming, Coating, Wind, FPA, Warehouse, & Automation) in establishing, prioritizing, & executing on a project portfolio that delivers new products and new process capabilities to meet business, plant, and department objectives. You will develop & deploy in-depth technical talent that solves problems through MIE, MEE, and DMAIC methodologies by creating and institutionalizing a deep understanding in the drawing and automated processing of Optical Fiber.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Drive Concord Optical Fiber plant to be the lowest cost manufacturing location for Color SMF
  • Support daily manufacturing of Optical fiber in a high paced 24x7 manufacturing facility
  • Develop, attract, and retain engineering talent
  • Manage department projects to support plant objectives
  • Excel at managing formal People Processes and informal people development. Provide coaching for broad & deep personal development of engineering team. Establish coaching relationships outside of immediate team for personal development.
  • Objectively assess product and process needs. Establish strategy & portfolio that brings engineering & innovation solutions to meet business needs.
  • Interpret business needs & incorporate them into project team goals. Integrate Project details with Management needs to form a well-articulated & executable project direction. Engage with project leaders & stake-holders to clarify and adjust direction.
  • Secure, motivate, and integrate people into project teams (direct reports & matrix team members) on critical opportunities and problems.
  • Set expectations for the team to develop Fundamental Understanding & Deep Process Knowledge. Coach & provide feedback on the approach. Drive teams to apply & institutionalize these insights into Manufacturing & Engineering systems to ensure sustainability.
  • Engage with Development to maintain awareness of technology inventory in R&D and externally. Be an advocate to pull in new technologies.
  • Ensure that processes are being used rigorously: Innovation, Process Excellence, Project Management, Safety/Environmental, etc.
  • Manage department and project budgets and forecasts.
  • Support the protection and generation of IP

Travel Requirements: minimal (less than 5%)


Hours of work: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, additional time as required, weekend team, 24x7 support



  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent technical Degree; Master's Degree desired
  • Successful technical project management, with evidence of progressive increase in responsibilities.
  • 5+ years of engineering supervision & leadership experience.
