Scope of Position: As an Lean Engineering Intern, you will report into the Lean Engineering Supervisor and department. The Lean department is responsible for all Lean initiatives, including:

  • Standardization, Built in Quality, People Involvement, measuring performance, structured problems solving (DMAIC), Continuous Improvement, Lean Project Implementation, and more.

The training for this role is designed to provide interns with a fundamental and comprehensive knowledge of Corning’s system of Lean Manufacturing systems. You will learn through one-on-one coaching from team members and Managers, and should expect shop-floor interactions while working on improvement activities and Kaizens. During the assignment, you will be exposed to multiple production processes and multi-functional work groups, broadening their exposure and learning experiences to prepare them for future entry level positions in the company.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work with employees at all levels of the organization to identify and drive continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Creating Standardized work.
  • Learn and coach Visual Management System methodology and execution.
  • 5S and visual management.
  • Participate in Brain storming and problem solving (DMAIC, PDCA).
  • Learn and execute project planning.
  • Learn, participate in Kaizen events.
  • Process and Value Stream Mapping, SIPOC.
  • Assist in creating platforms to share standard methodology.
  • Report out on CI initiatives and activities.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities that are linked to business goal results.
  • Demonstrate results through performance measurement and analysis.


Travel Requirements: Less than 10% domestically.
Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: Monday – Friday, standard business hours - Occasional need to swing to night shift for training.


Required Education:

Currently enrolled in a Bachelors degree program in Engineering (Industrial Engineering preferred).

GPA > 3.0


Required Skills: 

  • Knowledge of, Toyota Production System (TPS) principles.
  • Knowledge of, Lean Six Sigma principles.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations, to other employees of the organization; ability to prepare and present training, and facilitate brainstorming sessions.
  • Computer Skills - knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point).


Desired Experience / Qualifications / Skills: 

  • Technical writing, ability to deliver technical presentations to operators, engineers and managers.
  • Innovative and technically curious.


Soft Skills:

  • Effective communication & presentation skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to work well on multi-functional teams.
  • Results oriented.
