Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Position Summary: Provides expertise in engineering that improves process capability, equipment efficiency and product throughput. Supports or leads continuous improvement activities, new product or process introductions and cost reduction projects. Supports drive to fundamental process understanding and lower cost producer objectives. Works with other members of the Engineering and Operations community to solve difficult technical engineering related problems and provide hands on troubleshooting when needed. Provides 2D/3D CAD design work to support Automation Engineering project activities. Supports the development and execution of plans to evaluate new technology or improvements in existing technology resulting in a superior product in terms of quality and/or cost. 

 

Day to Day Responsibilities: 
•    Support day-to-day problem solving to ensuring timely resolution of short-term process and equipment issues. 
•    Provide mechanical expertise on projects involving cost reduction, process optimization and receivership of new processes. 
•    Utilize process data to gain fundamental understanding of manufacturing issues and implement permanent solutions. 
•    Solve process issues through experimentation and collaboration with other subject matter experts. 
•    Tracks the effectiveness of projects and implemented cost reductions, using up-time, cost, productivity and other appropriate measures. 
•    Provide trend analysis of key metrics and implement response plans. 
•    Identify chronic issues and provide long term corrective actions 
•    Provide hands on equipment troubleshooting 
•    Actively engage in plant safety initiatives and projects. 
•    Develop and update engineering and operations documentation. 
•    Provide training for operations workforce regarding equipment or operations changes.

 

Travel Requirements: Less than 5% 

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: 8-10 hours/day; 40-50 hours/week. This position requires flexibility as manufacturing issues arise and required off-hours coverage on nights and weekends on a rotating basis with co-workers. 

 

Qualification:

•    BS or MS in the following Engineering Disciplines: Mechanical Engineering or similar Engineering field.

•    2+ years of engineering work experience in a manufacturing/production environment. 

 

Required Skills
•    Solid 2D/3D modeling experience with Autodesk inventor, SolidWorks or similar design software 
•    Translate engineering solutions to requirements, then further to process and/or equipment designs which deliver all required and promised performance criteria. 
•    Ability to effectively multitask and prioritize work on an independent basis in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. 
•    Ability to provide high level hands on equipment troubleshooting 
•    Use scientific method and engineering first principles to solve problems thoroughly and effectively, using well-designed and executed processes. 
•    Works well in a team environment, is a “self-starter” and is “results oriented”. 
•    Strong communication and presentation skills. 

 

Desired Skills
•    Six Sigma Experience 
•    Project team leadership. 
•    Experience with statistical packages such as JMP, Minitab, and Power BI 
•    Experience with Allen Bradley, Beckhoff or similar PLC software 
•    Experience with ladder logic and structured text plc programming language 
•    Fanuc Robotics or similar experience is a plus.
