Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.


Scope of position:


  • Works with other team members to solve difficult technical, engineering related problems.
  • Leads continuous improvement activities, new product or process introductions, and cost reduction projects.
  •  Drives to fundamental process understanding and lowest cost producer objectives.
  •  Supports the development and execution of plans to evaluate new technology or improvements in existing technology, resulting in a superior product in terms of quality and/or cost.


Day to Day Responsibilities:


 • Provide process and equipment understanding and technical support for raw material delivery systems, pollution abatement, and facility systems supporting optical fiber manufacturing.

 • Solve process issues through data analysis, experimentation, and collaboration with other subject matter experts.

 • Provide engineering expertise for fundamental understanding of process and equipment issues.

 • Provide trend analysis of key metrics and implement response plans.

 • Lead projects involving cost reduction, process optimization, and new products/processes.

 • Actively engage in plant safety initiatives and projects.

 • Recommend/implement improvements to processes and equipment.

 • Identify chronic issues and recommend corrective actions.

 • Provide leadership or support for startup of new equipment and systems.

 • Develop and update engineering and operations documentation.

 • Provide training for engineering and operations workforce regarding equipment or operations changes.


 Travel Requirements:

 Less than 5%


 Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:


 ~8 hours/day 40 hours/week.

 This position requires off-hours coverage on nights and weekends on a rotating basis with co-workers.




 • BS or MS from an accredited four-year college or university, Mechanical Engineering preferred

 • 5+ years of engineering work experience in a manufacturing environment


 Required Skills:


 • Ability to learn new technology, equipment, and processes quickly.

 • Creative/innovative problem solving.

 • Strong technical fundamentals including equipment design and selection along with process engineering skills.

 • Strong data analysis and statistical skills. Must be proficient with Microsoft Excel and Access (queries, databases).

 • Experience with experimental design.

 • Ability to multitask and prioritize work on an independent basis in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

 • Strong communication and presentation skills. • Ability to work effectively on all levels of an organization.

 • Project management experience.


 Desired Skills:


 • Six Sigma Greenbelt certification.

 • Knowledge of manufacturing cost accounting.

 • Project management experience

 • Experience with Process Safety Management

 • Experience with hazardous materials

 • Experience with high purity piping systems


 Soft Skills:


 • Ability to work within a team and provide training to others.

 • Work well both within a multi-disciplined team and independently.

 • Strong communication and presentation skills.
