Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

 

Division Mechanical Process Engineer Position Summary:

 

  • Project Process Engineer for equipment/process development and installation and/or equipment debug for capital, cost reduction, and performance improvement projects.
  • Works with other team members to solve difficult technical, engineering related problems.
  •  Supports or leads continuous improvement activities, new product or process introductions, and cost reduction projects.
  •  Supports drive to fundamental process understanding and lowest cost producer objectives.
  •  Supports the development and execution of plans to evaluate new technology or improvements in existing technology resulting in a superior product in terms of quality and/or cost.
  •  Projects will align with Division Engineering strategy and be deployed worldwide.
  •  Safety must be a top priority on all projects.
  •  Position is in the Division Engineering organization within Corning Optical Fiber and Cable (OFC) and based in Midland, NC.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Solve process issues through data analysis, experimentation, and collaboration with subject matter experts.
  • Provide engineering expertise for fundamental understanding of manufacturing issues.
  • Provide trend analysis of key metrics and implement response plans.
  • Lead and/or provide support for projects involving cost reduction, process optimization, and new products/processes.
  • Recommend/implement improvements to processes and equipment.
  • Coordinate internal resources and third parties/vendors for the flawless execution of projects.
  • Create and update machine specifications, SOPs, quality documentation and training materials. Assist project team with the creation of documentation content.
  • Perform troubleshooting, process start-up, design, and documentation of Mechanical Systems for new or modified production equipment.
  • Read and interpret existing documentation to complete drawing packages, installation checklists, machine part lists, illustrations, and machine specs of production equipment.
  • Create mechanical equipment designs and layouts which meet Corning Machine Drafting Standards using AutoCAD and Inventor.

 

 

Travel:

 

  • As required to complete job assignments. Depending on business conditions, this could include North America and/or international locations.

 

Travel Requirements:

 

  • 25% (+/-) domestic travel, primarily within NC.
  • Some international travel may be required.

 

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flextime:

 

  • Typically, 40+ hours per week.
  • Typically, M-F but may require weekends depending on travel schedules or job assignment.

 

 

Required Education/Experience:

 

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum 4-years’ experience

 

 

Required Skills:

 

  • Strong computer skills: proficient with MS office and 3D CAD
  • Experience taking concepts/ideas and creating mechanical designs to solve both process and equipment issues
  • Creative problem-solving

 

 

Desired Skills:

 

 • Ability to learn new technology and processes quickly.

 • Creative/innovative problem solving.

 • Strong technical fundamentals with mechanical/process engineering skills.

 • Strong data analysis and statistical skills. Must be proficient with Microsoft Excel and Access (queries, databases).

 • Ability to multitask and prioritize work on an independent basis in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

 • Strong communication and presentation skills.

 • Ability to work effectively on all levels of an organization.

 • Works well in a team environment, self-organized, and detail oriented.

 • Six Sigma Greenbelt certification.

 • Knowledge of manufacturing cost accounting.

 • Project management experience.

 • Experience with statistical packages such as Minitab.

 • Experience with glass forming and fiber draw processes
