This position is part of a cross functional engineering team supporting Additive Manufacturing Engineering (AME), specific to leading the metals and non-organic additive manufacturing design group. Focus will be on supporting science and technology projects from early stage research to tech transfer into pilot manufacturing. This includes use of different processing equipment, providing engineering technical support, and lab work for the development and implementation of internal customer projects to improve process capability and capacity. Specifically, this position is a technical leadership position under the department manager.

 

Role Purpose:

  • Serves as subject matter expert for department’s metal AME key technologies. Applies expertise to problem solving, guiding/coaching others, developing experimental designs and new product development. Develops technological solutions to current and future business problems and products. Identifies and drives breakthrough process, product and/or technology improvements leading to major financial impact and/or competitive advantage. Leads migration of new technologies to the Division or Plant. Is a technology gatekeeper - monitors, communicates, and champions best practices and consistent application of technology. Senior technical advisor to programs and major technical projects.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical leadership to projects, including new inventions, attribute improvement, and product or process development
  • Coaches, mentors and/or develops emerging SMEs
  • Provides technical leadership in trouble shooting for customer concerns/needs around the technology
  • Identifies technical gaps and opportunities
  • Communicates across the organization and businesses to ensure understanding of technical project, the business impact, and engage critical people resources in problem solving
  • Explains technology to non-technical leaders and colleagues to improve understanding of capabilities and potential issues
  • Interfaces with Science and Technology / Research groups on innovations, new technical approaches, and helps transfer new technologies to the manufacturing environment
  • Consults and guides strategy development teams and/or leadership to make sure products can be manufactured with the current or proposed equipment
  • Build/maintain extensive technical network both within and outside of the company
  • Champions innovation and risk taking
  • Organizes and leads technical exchange meetings
  • Prime resource for the technical capabilities and direction for the business
  • Demonstrates mastery in and can teach the use of the scientific method to determine root cause of challenges and drive for fundamental understanding through engineering best practices, including material science, custom blending of novel materials to create new scientific opportunities.
  • Assist and/or lead in problem solving for customers
  • Supervise lab technicians
  • Work on project teams to support their technical goals as it pertains to using additive manufacturing with metals and other non-organics.
  • Lead project workstreams with respect to novel use of additive manufacturing to supplement or replace incumbent manufacturing techniques.
  • Manages and/or grows technologies that may have applications that use AME as a qualified process.
  • Work in a cross-functional environment: link between research and development, qualification, and tech transfer to manufacturing, delivering the best possible solution
  • Manage workload efficiently, with customer communication as top priority.
  • Translate work, solutions, and directions into presentations to leadership that can be understood and are actionable
  • Manage customer communications efficiently and timely.
  • Manage workload with infrequent oversight or management check-ins.

Projects Involved with:

  • Research of new materials and processes to meet customer technical challenges.
  • Qualify existing equipment for use with new materials, new substrates, or advancing techniques.
  • Provide part design, edits, and revision control
  • Manage raw material, lab space, machine maintenance, lab materials, etc.
  • Provide customer with subject expertise consultations.
  • Participate in department technical strategy as applied to metals AME. This includes personnel, equipment, research projects, vendors, partners, and industry leaders.

Role within Group:

  • Point of contact for all metal AME work for our department.
  • Lab manager
  • Manager of customer workload and priority calls
  • Lab equipment owner / steward
  • Design artist for both technical and aesthetic patterns/images/artwork.

 

Travel Requirements:

  • less than 25%, possibly internationally

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • Minimum: Master’s degree in an engineering field of expertise (Mechanical / Material Science, Metallurgy, Physics, or similar)
    • Unusual exception for stellar individual with mix of advanced studies and impressive experience in Additive Manufacturing.
  • 3+ years’ experience in additive manufacturing in metals.

  • Has written Engineering Reports
