Job Description:

  • Corning Inc. is searching for a process controls scientist/engineer who believes that the application of cutting-edge controls and machine learning technologies can improve manufacturing processes to provide competitive advantage. This is an opportunity to have significant impact by increasing process efficiency and plant profitability through the application of modern controls and machine learning technologies. The position of Advanced Process Controls Engineer is considered one of the most versatile technical roles within Corning Inc. The scope of this position can be broad to provide process controls and machine learning solutions to the wide variety of processes in Corning’s numerous businesses. The field of process controls is evolving rapidly from traditional, single-input-single-output sensing and control to complex, multi-input, multi-output control problems that call for the application of model-based control strategies (most notably model predictive control (MPC)). Corning values and utilizes the full spectrum of controls technologies. In addition to advanced controls technology, Corning is invested in the application of machine learning in manufacturing for continuous improvement. As an Advanced Process Controls Engineer, you will be expected to utilize machine learning methods to develop process monitoring and fault detection tools and/or classification/regression models for solving important manufacturing problems, such as defect classification, predictive maintenance, etc.

Corning’s MT&E division is seeking an advanced process controls engineer to support development of new processes, optimization of existing processes, and utilization of modern process controls and machine learning technologies to improve our manufacturing processes.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Specific job responsibilities will depend upon the active project and may include but are not limited to:
    • Design, develop, and implement process controls solutions for manufacturing processes
    • Evaluate existing process control strategies and propose and develop enhancements; this could be enhancing PID control-based strategies with cascade control, feedforward, gain-scheduling, etc. or applying a different, more-suitable model-based control algorithm (i.e., model predictive control, internal model control, etc.) 
    • Develop and maintain model predictive control-based solutions throughout the organization 
    • Work closely with manufacturing to define appropriate hardware and software platforms for implementing process control solutions 
    • Leverage process controls skill set to implement solutions in existing PLC/DCS environments
    • Develop in-depth knowledge of existing processes to identify process control opportunities and write proposals to initiate controls projects
    • Work with process subject matter experts and apply data analytics/machine learning to gain fundamental process understanding
    • Work closely with experienced professionals in multi-disciplined teams to design, develop and implement solutions for manufacturing processes  
    • Utilize multivariate statistical methods and machine learning for developing models for process monitoring, fault diagnosis and isolation, defect classification, and/or predictive maintenance
    • Lead projects and work in a multi-disciplinary research, development, and engineering environment to identify opportunities for advanced controls
    • Facilitate the transfer of new process control and machine learning technologies into manufacturing and provide training to manufacturing and engineering personnel
    • Generate intellectual property through technical reports, invention disclosures, and patent applications


Travel Requirements:

  • Possible international and domestic travel as much as 25%


Required Education:

  • Masters or PhD in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering with heavy coursework focus on Advanced Controls, Data Analytics, or Optimization.  PhD highly preferred. 


Required Years of Experience:

  • 1 -5 years of experience in industry on manufacturing processes.  New graduates with related internship experience will be considered.


 Required Skills:

  • Familiarity with a diverse array of process controls technologies such as model predictive control, non-linear approaches, and traditional PID control
  • Practical application of classical control theory, including PID control loop tuning
  • Programming experience in Matlab/Simulink
  • Controls-oriented modeling (system identification) 
  • Background in basic machine learning modeling (classification and regression) techniques
  • Problem solving abilities
  • Strong verbal and written skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prepare and present presentations effectively
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment.
  • Functions well on projects and team initiatives as well as independent assignments.  Results-oriented individual with a track record of meeting commitments and managing time well.  Values the strength of diverse team membership and is accountable to the team.


Desired Skills: 

  • Strong technical curiosity with desire to take on challenging technical problems
  • Programming in a variety of languages such as C++ or .NET languages, such as C# and Visual Basic
  • Skills that can be demonstrated in PLC and IEC based programming (ladder, structured text)
  • Background in multivariate statistical process control methods, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares (PLS) regression
  • Experience working in or leading cross-functional teams
  • Experience with Model Predictive Control (MPC) implementation
