Corning’s MT&E division is seeking an Advanced Process Controls Engineer to support the development of new manufacturing processes and the optimization/improvement of existing processes to provide competitive advantage. This is an opportunity to have significant impact through increased process efficiency and/or plant profitability to the wide variety of processes and numerous plants in Corning’s different businesses.

 

The position of Advanced Process Controls Engineer is considered one of the most versatile technical roles within Corning. The field of process controls is evolving rapidly from traditional, single-input-single-output systems to complex, multi-input, multi-output control problems that call for applying modern, model-based control strategies (most notably model predictive control (MPC)). Corning values and utilizes the full spectrum of these technologies. In addition to advanced controls technology, Corning is invested in the application of machine learning in manufacturing for continuous improvement. As an Advanced Process Controls Engineer, you will be expected to utilize machine learning methods to develop process monitoring and fault detection tools and/or classification/regression models for solving important manufacturing problems, such as defect classification, predictive maintenance, etc.

 

Job Responsibilities (Specific job responsibilities will depend upon the active project and may include but are not limited to):

  • Working closely with experienced professionals in multi-disciplinary teams to design, develop, and implement process controls and machine learning solutions for manufacturing processes; this includes identifying new opportunities for applying process control and machine learning technologies
  • Working with subject matter experts to develop in-depth knowledge and fundamental understanding of manufacturing processes to identify and/or propose process control opportunities
  • Evaluating existing process control strategies and then proposing and developing enhancements/improvements to increase process efficiency and plant profitability (e.g., via increased yields or throughput); this could mean enhancing PID-based control strategies with cascade control, feedforward, gain-scheduling, optimized loop pairing, etc. or applying advanced, model-based control algorithms, such as model predictive control (MPC), internal model control (IMC), etc.
  • Developing and maintaining MPC-based process control solutions throughout the organization
  • Working closely with manufacturing to define appropriate hardware and software platforms for implementing process control solutions
  • Utilizing multivariate statistical methods and machine learning for developing models for process monitoring, fault diagnosis and isolation, defect classification, and/or predictive maintenance
  • Facilitating the transfer of new process control and machine learning technologies into manufacturing and providing training to manufacturing and engineering personnel
  • Generating intellectual property through technical reports, invention disclosures, and patent applications

 

Travel Requirements

  • Travel will depend on active projects; international and domestic travel can be as much as 25%.

 

Required Education

  • Masters in Chemical Engineering, Electrical, Mechanical or with heavy coursework focus on Advanced Controls, Data Analytics, or Optimization. 
  • PhD highly preferred.

 

Required Years of Experience

  • 1-5 years of experience in industry on manufacturing processes.
  • New graduates with a Master's degree or Ph.D. will be considered.

 

Required Skills

  • Familiarity with a diverse array of process controls technologies such as MPC, non-linear approaches, and traditional PID control
  • Practical application of classical control theory, including PID control loop tuning
  • Programming experience in MATLAB/Simulink
  • Controls-oriented modeling (system identification)
  • Experience in applying multivariate statistical process control methods, such as principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares (PLS) regression, as well as basic understanding of other machine learning classification and regression techniques
  • Proven problem-solving abilities
  • Strong verbal and written skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prepare and present presentations effectively
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment.
  • Functions well on projects and team initiatives as well as independent assignments.
  • Results-oriented individual with a track record of meeting commitments and managing time well.

Desired Skills

  • Strong technical curiosity with desire to take on challenging technical problems
  • Programming in a variety of languages such as Python, C++, or .NET languages, such as C# and Visual Basic
  • Experience or a strong desire to learn PLC and other IEC based programming (ladder, structured text)
  • Experience working in or leading cross-functional and global teams
  • Experience with MPC implementation and maintenance/tuning
  • Experience operationalizing multi-variate machine learning driven models/solutions in manufacturing environments.
